teceem: Has Tencent ever published a non-mobile game?
Or something that's not multiplayer-focused and/or DRM'ed to hell and back?
Please wait where you are, and a cortex reaver will arrive shortly to escort you to the celebration.
Considering that apparently the dev team have all been let go, I'm guessing that Tencent saw an opportunity to take the IP and leverage it into something they think they can profit from. They'll probably reboot development and put out an SS3 that's more akin to a freemium/F2P mobile FPS with some kind of COD-esque multiplayer focus.

Sigh.
Do you guys not have phones?

SS3 development was done under licence from Night Dive. They still own the IP. Otherside was doing the development under licence only (and unless ND are utterly incompetent the licence will not be transferable without their explicit approval).

OTOH, Night Dive do have a further and fairly recent (Jul2 2019) System Shock trademark registration pending which includes usage of:

"IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services, namely, an ongoing series featuring comedy, drama, action and adventure, and animation provided through television, webcasts, and online streaming services; Entertainment services, namely, production and distribution of ongoing television programs in the field of comedy, drama, action and adventure, and animation; Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game; Entertainment services, namely, providing podcasts in the field of comedy, drama, and action and adventure; Virtual reality game services provided on-line from a computer network; Entertainment services, namely, providing ongoing webisodes featuring comedy, drama, action and adventure, and animation via a global computer network; Entertainment services, namely, providing temporary use of non-downloadable interactive games; Providing online non-downloadable game software"

And that sounds very much like the sort of thing 10c would be into. Frankly Otherside failing looked inevitable since their Underworld fiasco and them losing their publisher. ND shopping the IP around was always likely.
I hope SS3 is a sequel to SS2 and not some reboot or remake with better graphics.

I really want to see how Shodan has evolved after she survived in SS2.

Interesting. So if the game development is done I wonder if they'll release what's already been finished and then move into releasing an online game.

It was meant to be a sequel to SS2. They have the same gorgeous voice actress for Shodan, Terri Brosius. And yes, I also expected SHODAN to evolve into something more sinister, shallow, cold and equally adorable (I love SHODAN).

As far as I know it was not done completely, the final polishing is needed and it may cost twice as much, since the original team was dissolved Tencent might not be interested in doing the right thing. If they'll decide to do the *wrong* thing however, as to relaunch the development from scratch, they will be hated not only by me but by a small, yet considerable, army of SS2 fans (SS1 is a good game, but it's different, that's why).

License should remain intact. Otherside Studious was f@cked by Starbreeze if I'm not mistaken, due to invest / withdraw shenanigans, they literally put a small studio on the edge of bankruptcy. I do hope Tencent will act as Producer / Distributor / Publisher (licensed) and not as something else. However they might as well bargain with Nightdive about internal spin-off development for local market base. But since Nightdive hasn't released SS1 Remake yet they also could be in a bad situation, so bad like it was with Interplay > Fallout and Bethesda... [fingers crossed]

Considering the precedent set by games like Diablo Immortal, or Dungeon Keeper Mobile I'm expecting Tencent to do the wrong thing. Sure, they'll piss off the fans, but I imagine they're likely banking on making money hand over fist from their traditional mobile market, which neither knows nor really cares (sadly) about what made the original games so special.

Sigh.
Instinct definitely tells me they're making an entirely different and likely online focused game, but you never know. China funds movies all the time, so they might want to get into "traditional" games.

Yeah, all other things being equal Otherside ought to still have their licence, so long as they have been able to meet any contractual obligations. That would imply 10c as publisher for an Otherside game.

I'd have to say though, there is a lot of potential for Otherside to be struggling with any obligations they do have.

I hope the gameplay is based on SS1, not SS2.

SS1 let you play exactly as you wanted.
So if you like puzzles and story, you could concentrate on that, and not bother with the combat.
But if you liked combat, you could do that instead.

SS2 forced you to use combat, no matter what. And didn't let you just focus on the story and puzzles.

I finished both games. What? SS1 has puzzles yes, maybe some can be avoided but not that many. Combat can't be avoided in both games. In SS1 there is even more combat, I opened all doors except for 3 (have no idea if it's possible to open them) and killed all cameras in SS1 and I wasn't able to avoid combat, in cyberspace I wasn't able to avoid combat at all. I just don't get it, explain please.
low rated

In SS1 I believe you can change the level of combat/puzzles/etc via settings at game start....maybe one of them is to cut most combat entirely?

(I forget if there is such a low level option....haven't played it in 6+ months)

Oh yes in SS1 there was a combat difficulty 0 where you have bystanders enemies. I see now... yeah, make sense now. And I for some reason played the game on hard (not impossible).
