darthspudius: Are you talking about the goody goody federation or the corrupt racist government that gets used in back stories a lot?
I was originally thinking about the goody goody Federation as commonly depicted in TOS/TNG (as opposed to parts of DS9 or movies like ST VI where it wasn't so one dimensional). i assume you're talking about the novels? I'd like to know what novels/stories, as now you've got my curiosity piqued.

Breja: Honestly, I'd rather do without any reboots. B5 is still perfect the way it is. Nothing there that needs improving. As to sequels, all the spin-of/sequel attempts were not exactly going great, so I don't think we need that. And I'm actually one of the few people who didn't hate Crusade. But B5 is a closed story, perfect the way it is, not something that lends itself well to sequels and spin-offs.
I only partially agree with you as I actually really would like to see something new in the B5 universe. Crusade was entertaining (in much the same way that Enterprise was for me) but IMO it really didn't do the universe or lore any justice thanks to all of that studio interference ruining things.

Breja: A new Star Trek show would be much more welcome, that's a formula that lends itself perfectly to bringing in new crew and telling new stories.
I read once about an idea for web series that supposed to have been put on StarTrek.com pre-Abrams movies, set in a far future where a crumbling and corrupt Federation is only a shell of its former self and a brash young crew sets about putting it all back together. (Inspired by Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda?) It would have been interesting to see that expanded into a full series.

Breja: I'm probably the only guy who's favourite Doctor is Paul McGann.
I really liked McGann too; it's just a pity that his character got screwed over by FOX's poor planning with their TV movie. Despite the fact that he went on to be one of the most prolific Doctors from his appearances in books, audio dramas, comics, etc., I find that he's still practically unknown among people I meet who call themselves Doctor Who fans.

nightcraw1er.488: Would have liked to see Capaldi do the Doctor using his character from the Thick of it, "Dalek, i'll give you exterminate you f***** **** *** ****** ***** *****". That would have been better.

Thanks for that! That was awesome!

I have to say, I did not like the idea at all. Not only was it very much a rehash of Andromeda, but the bleak "everything went to shit" idea really did not appeal to me. I'm sure it could be used to tell some good stories, but what I'm hoping for is a"proper" Trek show, about exploring space and really cool sci-fi ideas.

Well, he did get a lot more recognition after the "Night of the Doctor" mini-episode. So much so that people even petitioned the BBC to make a spin-off show with the 8th Doctor. And while two simaltanous Doctor Who shows with different Doctors would probably not be a very good idea, I really don't know why the BBC didn't use that enthusiasm and the momentum DW got after the 50th anniversary to make some special episodes/tv movies with McGann to broadcast between season of the show.

blotunga: Why not both. Actually I like parts of the SW lore and parts of the ST lore.
I mean, light sabers though completely out of touch with reality, are cool and bring a medieval feel into science fiction.
Agreed. There is plenty to love in both universe's.

I realize this is more a sample size factor, but the vast majority of Doctor Who fans I've encountered in person aren't really Doctor Who fans so much as they are David Tennant fans; it seems as though they hate on principle anything that wasn't done by/with RTD and Tennant. I'm not exonerating the myriad issues with everything that happened afterward, but there were a lot of great moments that happened with Moffat and Smith and Capaldi (and earlier with Eccleston and McGann and the "classic" Doctors) that people are completely oblivious to.

When I start asking them about what they thought about the whole arc with Night/Day/Time of the Doctor, their eyes seem to glaze over and the conversation seems to immediately turn back to how much they loved Turn Left (Heh, funny how they don't remember Love and Monsters).

Still, it's nice to hear that McGann got more recognition after Night of the Doctor. And at least the Tennant Fangirls/Fanboys share my dislike for Clara.
When I was younger, Star Wars. The original trilogy.

I didn't like Star Trek much as a tv series but was ok with the movies (especially Wrath of Khan).

Then along came ST:NG and I watched it all the time. Given my age, that was "my" Star Trek. The original just seemed like some boring old tv show.

Now, however, aside from loyalty to the original SW trilogy, I think I may have to say I prefer ST overall. I can watch the originals and be amused by the over-acting and bad sets. I'll still watch NG (still over-acting but better sets!). I'd probably watch the others too if they were on. Maybe they are, I just don't know.

It surprises me to say that, but that's reality. I always used to be a SW fan, but as far as I'm concerned they've ruined everything.

I guess they really just aren't Doctor Who fans. Just like there are people who are fans of Nolan's Dark Knight movies and not really fans of Batman - I have a friend who really, really liked those movies, especially The Dark Knight, but I will never, in a million years, convince him to watch Mask of the Phantasm or read The Killing Joke or Year One.

Be amused all you want, but if you say, or even think, that The City on the Edge of Forever isn't one of the greatest hours in TV history I will fight you you in the street.

And when I say "fight" I mean "vehemently disagree with" and when I say "in the street" I mean "sitting here in front of my computer".

Actually if you keep an eye out through out TNG, DS9 and the movies there is a lot of subtle sub plots etc that hint that the federation aren't all goody goody. Especially with the likes of Odo and the Klingons. Racism and genocide.

Yeah, I run into a ton of "Doctor Who" fans, but they've never seen any of the original series before the reboot. I try not to judge, I really do, but I feel they're just jumping on the bandwagon. And I could never say this like I want on my Facebook, or my house would be torched. :P
