Emob78: I don't think it's fair to say that it's irrelevant, not when JJ Abrams and other members of the cast and crew have commented on the issue. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to completely disregard something as non-existent or irrelevant just because you see it a different way is a bit off the mark.

Go back to the original Star Wars. Vietnam was still fresh in everyone's mind, and Lucas himself has said that he got inspiration from the 'plucky low-tech rebels vs the super machine-like empire' concept. The huge empire of America invading the low-tech Vietnamese was part of the influence. The fascist looking uniforms of the imperials, the concepts of eastern mysticism, battles of morality and human duality, all of these things fed into the background of Star Wars. Does that mean those things are irrelevant just because people want to just turn their brain off and enjoy a silly space fantasy film? Get the picture?

Point being, Star Wars is about, and has been influenced by, a great deal more than just laser sword fights and rubber puppets covered in KY jelly.

Yes. It has. And that has nothing to do with that guys nasty, trollish comments. Nothing. At all.

jamyskis: So ignoring the fact that you're agreeing with a Nazi troll, why would you be disappointed that the lead characters are a black guy and a woman? Or do you mean that you're disappointed that it's not Luke, Leia and Han at the centre of things?

Niggles: I disliked the way they have obviously put up the cast. My main beef is with a strong female lead. Not my choice. Not for this franchise
I guess you're making some fan edit at home that cuts Leia out of the original trilogy?

You're trying to shoot down a message because of the method of delivery via the messenger. Don't mistake one for the other. To do so would be ignorant and well... kinda trollish.

No. I'm stating a fact. Inspiration with Vietnam war of Nazi uniforms etc. has nothing to do with nonsensical comments about how bad it is to have a female main character in a series that has always had female main characters.

Also, I seriously am sick of this bullshit with you people. Why does everything on this forum need to be highjacked by this shitty gamergate fallout? Just stay in your fucking containment thread and let others have normal conversations without your nasty, trollish tomfoolery.

SW VII is a product made by disney first and foremost. "$Cultural diversity is needed for a broader market appeal$" was a bullet point in the list of things this movie needed to have according to executives-the person in the last page brought it up in the most bait-y way possible but it's a legimate critique.

The point about Vietnam and the nazi uniforms is about subtle influences and 'larger themes' at stake. Putting a black man and woman as the two leads in a new generation of Star Wars films is NOT done on accident. Those faces are going to be plastered on every lunch box and t-shirt on Earth for the next couple of years. Their movie moments, their dialogue, everything about their characters are going to be parodied, repeated, copied, and merchandised. Nothing on that scale of potential profit is going to be done haphazardly and without cause. Now, does that cause affect me? Do I care? Not really. I lost faith in Star Wars during the prequel nightmare. I don't really give a shit either way. But I don't deny a truth simply because I may or may not have a stake in it's existence.

You're just playing that 'sit down and shut up' mantra of the group as it attempts to deflect a... different awareness brought about by a fellow traveler. Hey, at the very least a racist troll is honest. I can't say that about the rest of the 99%. If you want to deny the influences behind your favorite space fantasy pop culture franchise, that's your choice. But the larger issues shouldn't be denied or rejected just because some racist hillbilly tells you about how the jews are taking over hollywood. Don't be so hostile to ideas that seem hostile. Hey, at the very least someone's trolling is free entertainment to gawk at and mock.

So, basically, you are saying that we shouldn't deny the influence behind the choice of every white male lead in action movies so far, right ?

tort1234: The problem a lot of people have is that the main characters in this movie happen to be a woman and black guy.

Niggles: While i don't agree with rest of the post - it sure surprised me when Disney threw up who would be the main cast members. Count me as one who is a little bit disappointed. Have to wonder why Disney went this route (was pretty unhappy when Disney bought Lucasfilms as well_
Nostalgic franchises tend to take the heavy lifting off aging actors with a younger sprog who can do all that exhaustive running around, usually a son or daughter of the main character (Tron Legacy, Indiana Jones Crystal Skull, etc) Harrison Ford broke his ankle on the set, and J J Abrams broke his back trying to come to his rescue. No idea if someone else then injured themselves trying to come to J J Abrams rescue until the whole cast were splayed out like fallen dominoes, but I'm forced to assume so.

As for those who believe a female lead is indicative of a certain mindset or agenda, I’ll tell them what I told Josh Whedon’s Twitter account when he called Jurassic World sexist – it’s often really dangerous and stifling to divine a pattern from a single artistic work. Half the world’s population are women; so there's no call to be suspicious every time a female takes a lead role.

Elmofongo: I'm still upset that we don't see Luke in the Trailer.
avatar
Telika: Don't we ? There is artificial-hand-man petting R2 in that short scene.

Also, he's dressed in white, so he might not be the secret identity of the masked baddie.

I kinda expect him to turn up in a big "oooh" moment near the end, which might be spoiled by the fact that all the potential spectators will know all the details of it 5 min after the premiere, and the fact that luke skywalker might not be that important to the public.

Trailer/hype/spoiler/teese management must be hell, for these films.
I think we can all pretty much agree that the best thing to be excited for in this movie is John Williams upcoming orchestral soundtrack.

At least I have good music to listen to if the movie turns out to be boring.

Oh yeah all of a sudden things become very relative, i see. What a surprise.
Fuck it, I'm gonna start a new thread without all you assholes.
Relevant.

Niggles: I disliked the way they have obviously put up the cast. My main beef is with a strong female lead. Not my choice. Not for this franchise (and pls dont put words into my mouth - i can have an opinion without being accused of agreeing with a troll ok?) . SURE would have been great to have the old cast as central - i had expected it as would have a lot of old timer fans of the series. Just seems to me Disney is trying to make it appeal to broader & younger audiences
I have a problem with movies that have a strong female lead too because that is not equality. That is just female chauvinism. I don't see why the movie can't have a strong male AND a strong female as main characters. Tons and tons of movies have pulled this off so why can't Star Wars Episode VII do this too? One example of this can be found in the movie, Conan The Barbarian. The movie has Conan and his girlfriend Valeria. So I will not be purchasing a ticket to go see Star Wars Episode VII and I will not be buying the DVD or Bluray in the future. IF the black guy is one of the main characters and he is not some weakling in the movie then never mind. If the movie is fair to both sexes, I will spend money on the movie. Of course, if a movie with a strong female lead is really good, I will make an exception because I have a strong need for entertainment.
