real.geizterfahr: This could be a small hint that they dumped the EP I-III look!
So... the best thing about it are miniscule details that may, perhaps, mean this or that about the art design. Truly, the most awesome teaser ever!

Also, it's really not as if the way starships looked was the problem with the prequels. It's not as if redisigning ships and stuff would have made those movies any better. Hell, I even liked some of those designs, like the pre-imperial Star Destroyers. When I heard there is trailer for the new Star Wars coming, the movie with the orignal cast andy the great Max von Sydow I certainly did not think to myself "god, I hope there are some bulky speeders in this!".

MulderYuffie: This....doesn't look very good honestly...
avatar
real.geizterfahr: Why? Because we have X-Wings and TIEs back, instead of those streamlined (it's important to reduce drag in space!) crap fighters from EP I-III? Or because things look dirty and used again, instead of fabric new? Or is it the lensflare effect during the scene with the Falcon that ruined the whole teaser (I'm sure they put this in deliberately, because that's what everyone "feared" with Abrams doing the film)?

Sorry, I don't get it. The trailer doesn't tell us anything, except that the CGI is way better than in EP I-III and that we get back the look of EP IV-VI, which is a huge relief to me. I'm sick of Naboo starfighters, podracers and droid armies. Only this ball droid thing looks like something from EP I-III. But even here's some hope... Let me share some thoughts.

The ball droid seems to be running away from something and in the background you can see old and rotting parts of something that looks like an engine of a podracer (note that there are more broken and half buried parts behind the huge engine). After that scene, we get Stormtroopers, an old looking speeder with a horribly inefficient and bulky design (just like everything in the original trilogy looked like), X-Wings, the Millenium Falcon and some TIEs. This could be a small hint that they dumped the EP I-III look! Everything from the new trilogy is either rotting like the pod engines, or running away like that ball droid, because the look of the original trilogy is coming back ;)
I at least thought Episodes 2 and 3 had better CGI than 1.

But seriously you say the CG in 3 movies sucked in that time frame? Either you have seen better CGI in movies released along side it or George Lucas really does not know how to utilize CGI well.

The movie doesn't look good from a few seconds of different clips. That's a hell of a way to over judge something.

The CGI in the prequels weren't bad. They were very well done. There was just too much of it.

For me it's that they were too shiny. It was like watching a old 1950s film where everything is brand spanking new and shiny in a perfect world. Got me out of the star wars mood if that makes any sense.

Uhm... It's a fucking TEASER!? You know what "to tease" means? So, yes, the best thing aboout this teaser are some small details that could... well... tease the direction the new films are going to take. This teaser teases things O.O

I didn't say they were bad because of the design of the ships and droids. I just said it's one of the reasons I didn't like them. It didn't look like Star Wars at all, except from the Star Destroyer-ish ships (which were - together wit the Stormtrooper-ish clones - meant as a teaser for the rise of the Empire, but lets don't get back to that one).

Well... I did! I hoped for "bulky speeders" (the old, worn Star Wars look), proper actors (Hayden Christensen -.- Absolutely horrible!) and a script that respects the original trilogy (no more Midi-chlorian Jesus bullshit and "Jedi rapid tests"). The first teaser (note the words "first" and "teaser") showed me that we'll get back the Star Wars look, so I'm talking about this single aspect. I can't comment on the acting or the respect towards the original trilogy, because the teaser didn't show any acting or plot details. That's the job of full length trailers, not of small teasers.

What darthspudius said. The CGI wasn't bad for its time. It's just that almost EVERYTHING was CGI (even most landscapes). It was just too much.

It does! At least to me. That's why I'm happy to see a bulky and old speeder in this teaser ;)

Lol. Because that's exactly the look they were going for. No, really, someone thought that since the original trilogy was made in the 70's and the new one was taking place like two to three decades earlier it would be a logical step to go for a clean and shiny 50's look.

Also, the new teaser trailer is ass. It's like the Star Wars prequels had a baby with Twilight. Abrams can go suck my light saber.

As video gamers we should be envious that gaming graphics cannot even reach that level of grahpical quality, until now:

Besides I have grown up on Super Mario 64 and beyond for so long I can get used to any CGI.

Infact people is too harsh on Robert Zemeckis' animated motion capture movies. I like a Christmas Carol:

Well the way to look at it that it was a fresher time in the universe. It wasn't run down by the Empire like it was in the originals. It could of looked ALOT worse! haha

I didn't know that. That explains a lot.
The one coming up with that idea and especially the one that thought it was good enough to follow through with should never be allowed near any sequel again. It is a horrible idea for star wars...

Wait!
Indiana Jones and the crystal skull. Gah! The same mistake!

Once again- The Dark Knight teaser- no footage, just some dialog, "teases" a lot of the story, the tone, and acting. And it's memorable enough to come to mind easily eight years later. This? Over a minute of footage and it teases... bulky speeders?

Let's face it- if this was good, properly awesome for a Star Wars movie, you would not have to try to defend it with the "it's just a teaser" defense. It's a new Star Wars movie, damn it. With the original cast! It's not supposed to be "just a" anything, not for a second.

Probably.Though it's a small comfort. ;)
Talking about CGI, want to see something really silly? Go back and watch one of the prequels, and when someone is flying or being thrown on camera, slow down the playback and pause it when someone is in mid-air... think the scene where Dooku tosses Kenobi or Anakin around. The CGI stunt FX are so bad looking. Very unnatural movement. Stringy, inhuman shapes take over. It's pretty sad. Maybe that's why the FX teams are always pushing for faster and louder. Anything less and the magician's wires start showing.

That's another benefit to practical FX, IMO. Yeah, that creature in the cantina might be a midget in a rubber suit, but the suspension of disbelief holds because it's at least a physical object to look at. It reacts and absorbs parts of its environment. CGI always has looked like a shiny chrome bumper on a rusty wagon.

gamefood: I like that cute girl on that big flying fridge ♥.♥
Good, to hear. I bet we will get to see a lot of her as she spends half a film begging her dad to let her fly the Millennium Falcon.
Looking at her I see the whole Princess Leia thing.

I was never much of a Star Wars / Star Trek fanatic, but this really could end up being something to want to watch. If nothing else, we might actually get to see a stormtrooper with personality. That will be good.
I love how the very first Storm Trooper ever we see without helmet is a black guy. It's like Disney is screaming "look at us, we're not racist, we have black friends too you know".

I wouldn't be surprised if it's because a black guy contrast better with the white storm trooper armour. You'd be surprised how often things like this play a important part in choosing actors for various roles. We'll see if he spends a lot of time in that armour when it's released.
