You can get the newest version (1.2) from Screen7's website thought. No need to stick to the old version.

Yup, I went to school with a kid who at the age of 13 got a game reviewed in Crash Magazine. Got a higher rating than most of the professional games being built at the time. Written entirely in Basic with a Poke hacked font for the graphics :)

If just by looking at the screenies and reading the description it sounds like something you'd like, you'll probably really like it. The combat is a bit too luck-oriented and can get tedious, but more often than not it's avoidable to a certain extent. Also, you'll probably want to save-spam, as you never know what's gonna get thrown at you sometimes. There's a vast universe and a ton of variety of things to do, the tech tree is rather large. I thoroughly enjoy it, but I don't mind tedious as long as it delivers what I want.

There's always someone who'll find an excuse isn't there! lol

I went ahead and took one for the team. Game number 28 and no freebies yet,

Went on the Steam forums to see what the folks over there were saying and some of the complaints actually made me more interested in the game. Stuff like

1) Complaint - I can't hold my pirate empire together
Answer - Keep taxes high and no debt (defies conventional wisdom for the win)

2) Complaint - I took a break due to back surgery and cant find my 100 million dollar in factory assets due to a poor GUI.
Answer - no answer but I like the fact that the game allowed that type of game play

4) Complaint - I read around and after looking around I don't see how I can raid a plant or conquer one.
Answer - there were answers but I like my space game to also have a planetary aspect, not just be a flying sim

3) Complaint - I'm Admiral and use a Stonewall battleship with long range lasers, it blasts everything to pieces...no challenge...mumble
Answer - there were answers but for me easy games are fun and sending in long range blaster to smash stuff sounds like a fine way to spend $2.49
