Hello there, I'm just casually going to help spread an article around which has a curated list of engines to use instead of Unity, since I don't see it making it to Q4 2024. And that list is here.

Discuss the engines and options amongst yourselves.

Bookmarked.
Just to see how well (?) this will have aged in Q4/2024 .

If good games can be made in free engines fairly well, then free engine unless you need a specific support.

Though i recall going through Yahtzee's videos a few years ago, and he was doing a commentary playthrough of his own game, where a free engine for point&click games he was like the only person to actually make a game in said engine.

Now while Ori and the Blind Forest showed Unity can make really beautiful good games, is there any really good examples of Godot out there to use as a benchmark?

Unreal has the Superman demo and Mario64 fan project that was being worked on a while back (though nintendo would never let such a project get released)
OGRE maybe. Torchlight 1 & 2 and Venetica are built on it iirc

The only one I know is The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizzaboy, which is a 2D point & click adventure game. Looks great, but I'd hardly use it as a benchmark.
Godot is getting a lot of tracktion. And I think iit will get more as an outcome of this. For some games that have been made with Godot they have a showcase page: https://godotengine.org/showcase/

Unreal enging is still popular, and good alternative. It has a pricing structure that favors indies (5% royalty, but only of the game has more than $1M income).

The problem with Godot is that it is still small, it does not have a large asset store and not as many tutorials as for example Unity or Unreal

Gamemaker still exists, and games are made with Gamemaker, but it is really only a 2D engine, so has limitations

Wached a 100 hours in Godot video, and apparently accessing features or doing things is a lot more confusing. In Unity to get a location it's transform, while in Godot it's like 8 different ways depending on it's 2D, 3D, local, Global, etc. Maybe 4.0 Godot is a lot better not sure yet.

Guess it just needs a lot more polish and making it uniform and makes sense, and having an asset store is likely not a good idea, while being able to import any asset is a better idea.

As for tutorials, yeah will probably need it. Bumbling through blindly will just discourage people.

And you have to wait for it.

I see what you did there... ;o)

"The game engine you've been waiting for."

(quote taken directly from https://godotengine.org/)

So, the Godot developers did already think of that joke.

Godot is actually on 4.1.

In fact, you can even get a build of 4.2, even though it's still in development. Just expect bugs and breaking changes if you do (but don't be afraid to report the bugs!).

What CEO? Godot is an open source project which eschews such concepts of organization. See? No hierarchy.

Well the video certainly was a year old.

Hmmm makes me really wonder if i should give half an effort to try and remake Operation Inner Space... Though would there be enough benefit to do it. Hmmm...
