Nergal01: Well. I guess that's the main difference between the two games. Fallout 3 all lays it out for you and gives you a guideline to follow and all the reasons why you should identify with the main character and do the things you do,
That's not the way I'd put it.
Besides, for the most part I ignored the main quest and the pacing seems to apply everywhere. Even if you just walk around, everything is in an acceptable distance. Once my interest for something fades the next thing is just around the corner.
In FNV, when my interest fades the next interesting thing is still distant.

Nergal01: whereas New Vegas tasks you to find your own motivation as to why you do the things you do and when.
I understand why that's a good thing but in my opinion ideally a game should have both qualities.

The problem is that Fallout NV just doesn't manage to keep me interested. If it had more diverse and some energetic music tracks and had an atmosphere that resonated with me for example, then I'd be fine with finding my own motivation.

If I don't feel interested in the whole game then I can't find the motivation to even get to the good parts of the game

Hm, I didn't mind walking the distance to the next thing, tbh. In fact, I thought that Fallout 3's locations felt a lot more "samey" than NV's. Sure, the scavenging part worked well enough, so I didn't mind going through the umpteenth office building but there wasn't much to stand out either, IMO.

Well, that's probably the issue that can't really be resolved here. I didn't even need much motivation, the game just "clicked" for me from the get-go. All I needed was a little nudge in the right direction and off I went.

Maybe I'll be in the mood to play FNV sometime in the future. :)
Vegas is not significantly different from Fallout 3, you do the same things as before only the sceneries and enemies have slightly changed.
I remember feeling that Vegas was a more colourful game though...compared to Fallout 3. Plus the DLCs were quite fun.

Vegas is still as buggy as Skyrim and Fallout 3 on PC, not that the console versions are any better it seems. So expect the usual Bethesda bug & crash-fest.

1) Tale of Two Wastelands + YUP patch for FNV + NV AntiCrash(in worst case you will see the reason)
2) NV Enhanced Camera
3) DKBulletTime, and use BulletTime instead of VATS(unbind it)
4) TTW version of classic fallout weapons
5) TTW version of Monstermod
6) Darnified UI
7) Definitively AngelPark and A World of Pain
8) Boosted skills and one of the mods that quaters the XP earned
... and your quest mods here...

Profit!

Me? I used FNVPlugin to combine smaller mods and FNVedit to ressolve mods problems (writing to same item, list or cell) to create a merged patch. I played the game with over 250 mods ~ 100 effective due to combining.
And it was rock solid.

I hope someday we will get them on here .

Skysect: I hope someday we will get them on here .
unlikely they are tied in to steam
oblivion and fallout 3 might get released on here but they would be the cut off point

The Steam version was eventually changed, doesn't actually USE GFWL exactly but it's still there.
As far as I know the Disc version used GFWL.

Smannesman: It has all the Obsidian hallmarks, good writing and fun characters.
I thought they were known for not so good characters and unmemorable story?

Still.. I'm trying to play kotor 1 and 2 again but perhaps I just lost my interested more in kotor 1 because I remember it better. So perhaps I should just go for kotor 2 again.. I mean they had that recent patch and all. But I would ike to play both again.

Fallout 4 has best shooting mechanics and it's quite fun but as an rpg.. I wouldn't call it an rpg. And by fallout 4 I meant 4 not new vegas. I think I'll go back to look how it was (never finished) after I get trough Fall 4, even though I explore. It will take a while and already has.
