Bavarian: I'm curious about other people's sleeping habits. How long do you take to fall asleep? Do you have any rituals? A pillow between your legs or something like that? Do you wear pyjamas, or boxers, or do you sleep naked? How many hours of sleep per day do you need? Do you prefer your blanket thin or thick? Do you snore or thrash around in your sleep?
Stomach sleeper here as well. Usually fall asleep right away (within 5 minutes if settling down for the night). My ritual generally consists of reading for an hour or so before packing it in. I just sleep in my undies (but the wife likes to sleep in the buff - I like it! :P) I generally sleep 6 to 7 hours. Even if I wanted to, I don't tend to sleep longer. I wake up after 6 hours or so and that's it. I like a cold room with lots of blankets.

As to snoring, it was getting so bad that my wife was sleeping downstairs and even then she could hear me. I went to a sleep clinic and it turns out I have a mild sleep apnea. Got one of those CPAP machines and now I don't snore and I sleep far better (used to wake up feeling like I had been wresting with a mutated platypus). The machine has forced me to learn to go to sleep on my back, which I loathed, but now I;m getting used to it. I've also managed to get to a point where I can sleep on either side without interfering with the mask/hose. My only real wish with the situation is that I could get a mask like the ones the TIE Fighter pilots have in Star Wars. Wife probably wouldn't like that too much though...

Tauto: Side sleeper, cannot sleep on back because for some reason my breathing (chokes).10 minutes to 3 hours but I usually get up and play something after a couple of hours.Coffee seems to relax me and help me sleep, tea and I'm up all night pissing especially winter nights.Nude as I toss and turn all night and the pajamas used to strangle me from the twisting. And clever dicks keep your comments to yourself.
Side sleeper here, too. Can't do PJs for the same reason - get all twisted and bunched up.

I'd love to sleep on my back but then I snore like a chainsaw and it causes me to have pain in the palate / throat area the next day. Mid-night piss at around 3am; if I have a lot of stuff on my mind then that often does it for me - can't go back to sleep. Travel the next day is one of those things that will keep me awake so I started the habit a few years back of driving the day before a customer visit and staying overnight in a hotel instead of having a crappy night of sleep before a long drive.

Manage around 5-6 hours of decent sleep and the last 2-3 hours are pretty crappy.

Just saw this thread.

How does the fox sleep? I'm a side sleeper with one leg raised and bent at the knee for support. Right side (facing wall) dominant, but do rotate sides. I can get achy if on one side for prolonged periods.

Sleeping on the back is no good. Used to sleep on my stomach often but that just screws with my back.

No pajamas as that's too constrictive. Shorts and a shirt. Anything less and I get too hot. ;-)

Lots of blankets. I have to feel "covered"

Osculating fan on for "white" noise and I'm usually out in five minutes. I can't stand it being too quiet.

Used to sleep with two pillows to elevate my head forever, but finally trained myself to sleep with just one in the past six months.

Ahh, the joys of getting a good night's sleep :D
Side and stomach, lots of tossing and turning. Takes a long time for me to fall asleep, its hard to stay asleep and when I have to get up I feel like the walking dead. Had many bouts of insomnia over the years but thankfully have not had an episode in 5 or so years.

Don't expect good nights when you have depression and anxiety.

Jammies are the worst. Buff for the win. Been told I snore. Which is bullshit because the one who falls asleep first always snores and I NEVER fall asleep first

If I get 5 hours solid sleep then I'm happy and your right going to bed with something on your mind, sleep is impossible no matter how tired you may be.

Is anybody else seeing the irony here?
I sleep on my left side. When I don't want to wake up in the morning but know I can't go back to sleep I lie on my stomach and groan into my pillow.

timppu: I'm unsure what your question was. Do you mean how can anyone muster 8 hours sleep time per night (if they have a tight schedule with their life, ie. not enough hours per day), or how can anyone make themselves sleep min 8 hours per night, without waking up before that?
The latter. I meant it more as a personal sleep policy. And preferably something that one does that takes willpower out of the equation (e.g both to go to sleep even if one doesn't want to and waking up).

I was proving a point by highlighting your statements. You accuse me of being immature DIRECTLY after saying you follow me around for the sole purpose of downvoting my posts.
You need a life, man.
I'll quit replying to you, though. No need to drag down the thread. I've had enough trollbaiting for one day.

I usually sleep on my side or in a weird position, depending on how tired I am.
Post edited March 07, 2016 by zeogold
I used to sleep on my stomach until my late thirties, I think, then slept on my side, then my knees started to bother me in that position, so I started sleeping on my back. Never used to have a pillow, now I use one. I sleep on my side if I have a thick blanket that's more comfortable on the knees, and I sometimes go to sleep part way, with one leg over the side or some such.

As for falling asleep, these days I'm pretty tired when I go to bed and usually sleep in minutes (or less). That said this particular time of the year allergies make my nose run and I get very little sleep. I wake up after 3-5 hours and find it hard to go back to sleep with my nose running.
Games that make me sleepy:

- Daggerfall (I usually start yawning even if playing it in the middle of the day).

- Most point'n'click adventures, especially if I am stuck and just can't figure out how to continue.

Games that wake me up, even if I was yawning and ready to get to bed:

- Team Fortress 2: I feel I could play it for the whole night without feeling tired, it is like a constant adrenaline rush Fortunately for me most TF2 servers, at least ones with low ping times, tend to become empty at nights so that is a good time to stop playing myself, unless I want to play on American servers with lousy ping times.

- Descent Freespace

About five or six, maybe even seven years ago I would fall asleep in any position, shift many times, wake up in some random position as well. Then I got interested in lucid dreaming and astral projections. One thing mentioned before doing these, was to get yourself into comfortable position. Then relax your body, feel it shutting down while keeping your consciousness aware. To do so, I found that I can only begin relaxing if I am lying on my back. With an idea in mind that if astral projection, lucid dreaming happens, I may easily get up.

However, I would usually try this before my night sleep, being tired already. But I still could get into the relaxed phase. And for my great surprise, I would find myself fully rested and remembering lucid, vivid dreams. I loved it. So ever since then I always fall asleep on my back and I always consciously relax my body. Also, I sleep naked.

These past few months I find myself waking up in random position, be it on back, on stomach, or either side.

Oh, and I always have to be covered with something. For example, if I had to sleep in a train station on a bench, I would obviously be dressed and would probably even want to wear my jacket. Sometime during the night I would wake up shivering out of cold. But if I cover myself with same jacket (as a blanket), I can sleep through. I think when being covered with something, the air around me gets warm because of my body and creates sort of a warm environment. And I just can't stand cold.
