(Yes, this is a counterpart to another topic that was just posted; you aren't just imagining things.)
Sometimes, games go too far with realism which ends up making the game less enjoyable. My favorite example here is the need to eat in Ultima 7; if you don't feed a character, the character starts taking damage, and feeding a character involves navigating through the game's horrible inventory system to find that piece of food in your bag, and then using it on a character who needs to eat. Also, it doesn't feel like it adds anything to the game, or if it does, it doesn't add enough to counter the frustration involved with feeding.
While "realism" might not be the right term, Ultima 4 and onward require mixing reagents to cast spells, and I dislike that mechanic as it discourages the use of magic, which is the most interesting option the game gives you during combat. Furthermore, many of the spells are balanced enough with MP costs alone (lower level spells especially). The games would be better if all the reagents except Mandrake were removed, and spells that don't require Mandrake stopped requiring reagents at all.
