(Yes, this is a counterpart to another topic that was just posted; you aren't just imagining things.)

Sometimes, games go too far with realism which ends up making the game less enjoyable. My favorite example here is the need to eat in Ultima 7; if you don't feed a character, the character starts taking damage, and feeding a character involves navigating through the game's horrible inventory system to find that piece of food in your bag, and then using it on a character who needs to eat. Also, it doesn't feel like it adds anything to the game, or if it does, it doesn't add enough to counter the frustration involved with feeding.

While "realism" might not be the right term, Ultima 4 and onward require mixing reagents to cast spells, and I dislike that mechanic as it discourages the use of magic, which is the most interesting option the game gives you during combat. Furthermore, many of the spells are balanced enough with MP costs alone (lower level spells especially). The games would be better if all the reagents except Mandrake were removed, and spells that don't require Mandrake stopped requiring reagents at all.
The last thing we need is more bollocks threads that do excatly what you've just done.

Effin' mirror threads every time..
Unless I'm missing something, this is not another silly copycat thread, but a genuine attempt at serious discussion?

Personally I don't really mind any kind of unrealism in games. Suspension of disbelief and all that. Hey it doesn't make sense that soldiers would walk forward and attack diagonally, and yet I enjoy chess. So similarly I can overlook the fact that you can carry 15 weapons, eat food and instantly heal or not be able to put more than 300 bullets in your inventory, even though you still have available space for a different type of bullets. Like chess, it's just a game with rules.

Like the OP though, I did find unnecessary realism annoying quite a few times. Off the top of my head, I was annoyed by shops closing at night in Might and Magic 3-5. That's normal I know, but it did make having to pass time till morning a bit frustrating. In MM 6-8 it wasn't as bad, because you could just pass time more easily.
Yes. Silly realism. I hate it when entities are doing things. Why can't we just exist in an ethereal void where our very thoughts have become entire universes of possibilities?

If this is your problem, you don't need video games. You need some good weed and lots of rocking tunes, man.

Your memory isn't quite right. In World of Xeen, shops are open 24 hours, even though that might not be realistic. (On the other hand, having a full 24 hours pass every time you shop is a bit much.) It's only MM3 that had shops only open at certain times.

On the other hand, it is annoying in MM3 when a shop is closed because it is the wrong time. It's also annoying in the Ultima series (starting with Ultima 5), and to a lesser extent in the Bard's Tale series (because you can make it day by going back to the Adventurer's Guild, and every store is open during the day).

Another annoyance is when the game doesn't let you sleep outside in towns when the game does let you sleep in the wilderness. Sometimes there's no explanation, while sometimes the game calls such attempts vagrancy or something like that. (The first Elder Scrolls game, Arena, is particularly bad at that; if you arrive in the first town at night, you are stuck without a safe place to rest, as there's nobody to ask where the tavern is.)

I thought of another good example: In the Infinity Engine games, if two characters are not near each other, you can't trade equipment between them. While this may be realistic, it is quite annoying.
Why are my posts in this topic "low rated"? I post a serious topic about video games and people are censoring me.

(Yes, this is censorship given the effect that downrepping the original post of a topic has.)

This is a legitimate thread. Why do you have top be so "do not discuss this" here?

What's wrong with mirror threads, especially when there are, indeed, different things to discuss?

When I look down in FPS games and see my legs, my thighs are NOT that fat. WTF!
you are dscussing nothing - stuff that could have been discussed in the other thread (and probably is).

Actually, I am discussing something in this thread, as is ZFR.

You, on the other hand, are basically trying to shut down legitimate discussion. (In other words, you are censoring a topic for no good reason.)

The similar thread title probably rubs people the wrong way. Makes it hard to click on the right thread sometimes, and I'm sure there have been enough meaningless mirror threads for the thought of one to carry over annoyance from all the others regardless of its content.

But to contribute to the actual topic, I hate when large games don't include fast travel or use archaic versions of it. Basically, I don't want to have to trudge around on foot for 20 minutes because some developer thought it was super realistic. Realism stops being fun when it becomes tedious.
If the games are sims or grogy style games i may give two shits about some kind of realism silly or other wise.
Even then compromises have to be made, meh.
Really isn't top of my list of pet hates....
Really doesn't bother me much, as it rarely gets in the way of a good game.

feck typing skills.ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
