The forum's been strangely quiet about the final season, hasn't it? Well, the season's over, the show has reached it's conclussion, and I hope at least some of you have seen, cause I'd really like to compare notes. Spoilers follow, obviously.
I was never a great fan of the original Samurai Jack run. I've seen some of it, some episodes I even liked, but for the most part I just found it kinda "meh". Not my style. The humor didn't work for me, the mix of fantasy and cyberpunk never really coalesced into something I'd enjoy. My favourite episodes were the ones that left out all the jokes and robots and futuristic stuff.
But I like the trailers for the new season a lot, it looked like a much more moody an interesting show, so I gave it a chance.
The first episode was good. Didn't blow me away, but I liked. Then episodes 2 & 3 happened and my god, was my mind blown. Those were fantastic. Absolutely awesome. The mood, the near dialogue-less storytelling, the haunted Jack, the desperate fight agains Aku's daughters, that final fight in the snowy forest... pure magic. I can't praise those enough. But then the show, much to my dismay, went downhill. Episode 4 was still good, though not nearly as strong. But then it got worse. Jack's inner demons were disposed of way too quickly, his entire character arc wasted. He just returned to his old self after some meditating and a magical transformation. Back to his old self, exactly as he was, without a trace of how he was changed by those last 50 years. Then, in the low point of the season we wasted an entire episode on a detour entirely pointless to the overall plot, except for bringing forth out of nowhere a fan-service like romance. The show bounced back somewhat in the last two episodes, but the edge that the initial episodes had was lost for good. The resolution was just about as predictable as possible, the final episode rushed and rather anti-climactic (though I do like the very last scene).
I wonder, did the long time fans of the series see it differently than I did? The latter episodes of the season were definately more like the original show, so maybe you enjoyed that return to the old style? Was I the only one dissappointed with how the dark, violent mood and older, rougher Jack petered out as the season went on?
