Thanks for the review drealmer7, seems like this game have a high replay value. I've just hoping for a better deals on GOG next sale and wishlisted by now.
low rated
At the moment, are there any major balance issues in this game, like certain skills that are either overpowered or underpowered, or encounters that are simply not fair?

I don't think so, I've not gotten very far, but, it seems very well balanced. Of course, you could gimp yourself by building badly I suppose (like by maxing every craft skill, taking no offensive skills, etc.) It's probably important to have a high offensive ability. I have 2 high offensive abilities (crossbows and metathermics) but not a lot of defense so things are difficult, but, tactically challenging, not imbalanced-hard. It's very rewarding. There are tactics to be used and learned and they all vary on your build. If you don't want to be challenged, it's not a game for you (it's not an aRPG, after all.) You can very easily be super-strong and kick-ass at combat (but not overpowered, still), but then the balance comes in in that you will be sacrificing the ability to do other things, like spot traps, talk your way out of confrontations, get access to certain areas, and other various aspects, etc. It's one of the most balanced RPGs I've played, in the overall scale. I strongly suggest looking at the wiki to get a sense of how things work and figuring out how you want to develop your character. Not much sense in getting telekinetics if you aren't going to use melee. Not much sense in going with evade and dodge if you are going to use heavy armor. Not much sense in using social skills if you are going to minimize your WILL stat. Etc.
The biggest problem about Underrail that everyone seems to agree on is with a big location at the end game which I won't say the name for spoiler reasons. Both Neogaf, and the Codex complained that it is a drag to go through and that it isn't well designed. Before the latest patches, it was even worse since the mobs respawned pretty quickly. The patch stopped certain mobs from respawning iirc.

I'm close to endgame but I haven't actually gone there yet since I'm trying to finish the sidequests first. I'm having a blast playing the game so far.

drealmer7: There has already been a BUNCH of patching.
Yep, i was notified about it several times and from what i saw in the changelog, a lot stuff have been fixed so far. And as you said, cRPGs are generally better played after they receive some patches (no need to get paranoid and wait a whole year of course!), especially if the dev team is small. So many variables, tables, NPCs, dialogues, stats, numbers.... so little brain! :)

Have fun, i will have some soon! :)

I'll say that Underrail is a goddamned masterpiece, but I'm also near said location. If you're not hostile with a certain... group, it's not as much of a pain in the ass right?
I played Underail Alpha, but its too slow. I thought that fallout 1 was slow but underrail was worse. I require to have fast-paced action and combat. I dont like turnbased combat.

then it is certainly not a game for you
It's definitely on the high end of my wishlist. It does look and sound intriguing. Unforutnately, it may stay there for a some time. I'm currently on a moratorium on the games-buying front. That and I'd need to set up my Windows lappie up again that's been packed away in the closet for the time being.

It's too bad the dev didn't have enough foresight to think about an actual multiplat release, which he said won't be really possible due to its .NET dependencies.

CharlesGrey: Well, that's just disappointing. They re-released it as a new, improved ( and more expensive ) version and it's still loaded with bugs?
I could be wrong. But I think it is because it is essentially a brand new engine and port and lots of changes in the first place, so it's got some issues. It is a great game though! I actually could be wrong and the latest version might be here.

Darn, I thought I'd already bought it here on GOG, but it seems as I've still got it wishlisted.
Ah, well, I'm going to have to pop over to the dark side for a bit and play my Steam copy. ;)

It's of course not my choice what you do with your money, but I'd like to suggest that if you want to buy a copy here some day, that instead of having 2 copies of your own (steam+gog), that you pass the greatness on to someone else so they can enjoy it. I do understand wanting to have the DRM-free version even while having the other version though, so it's just a thought (I want more people to experience the game!)

drealmer7: I've been spending a good amount of time figuring out the varying mechanics and feeling out the game before fully deciding on my build and playstyle and I must say it is STELLAR!!!!!

I've never been so impressed by all the varying mechanics in an RPG. WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!

The implementation of skills and abilities is unlike anything I've ever been exposed to. They affect each other and it is all logical and sensible and creates a unique experience. The Stealth mechanic is elaborate and deep and wholly rewarding (I almost never play stealthers in my RPGs, but, it is almost a MUST for me in this game it is so frikken good!) Also, people react to stealth in a variety of ways, like, a nice peaceful weaker person might see you stealthing and go "OMG SOMEONE SNEAKING AROUND!" and run away from you and never come back, and you won't know what they had to offer if you wouldn't have been such a sneaky bastard.

Exploration is PHENOMENALLY rewarding.

Role-playing is top-notch in the area of branching quest/story possibilities and combat mechanics.

There is an XP system that sets a new precedent for RPGs. They call it the "Oddity System", and while "classic" is still an option (where you get XP for killing mobs, finishing quests), it was made to use the oddity system. In the Oddity System, you get XP for discovering areas, completing quests, and finding items in the world (that are lore-based and add a great depth to the game.)

Any type of way you want to play is valid and rewarding. PLUS, there's a lot of non-violent resolutions to be had (if you've got the skills), or, not, if you want.

The "magic" system is exceptional. They call it PSIONICS and they are essentially mage skills, but, it's just done SO uniquely, and allows for combining with other abilities that you don't feel like a weakened mage-class. (ex: my build uses the damage PSI skill called "metathermics" and crossbows as my weapon whilst being a hacking stealther that is exceptional at persuasion/intimidation/mercantile, and it is a very viable/strong build.) Guns skills encompasses all types of guns, but in order to carry/use some, you need STR, so you can build around that, etc. The variety is great!

Mercantile is something I never choose in RPGs because who needs cheaper prices (and that is generally all it provides)? NOT so in this game, there's more to it in UnderRail that actually makes it appeal!

OH, and there's an in-depth crafting system that is very very cool and elaborate as well (crafting isn't something I'm into normally, but, it's pretty damn cool in this game!)

I could go on and on.

Long story short:

If you want an in-depth, supremely rewarding, unique, incredible RPG. PLAY UNDERRAIL!

huge wiki that helps a lot
That is one mouth-watering review. +1
I'd wish follow OP advice, but I don't buy indie games not on Mac.

Yeah, I'm kinda interested in it, but I already have UnderRail, Shadowrun and a few others, so I might as well give Wasteland some more time before I pick up a copy.
