drealmer7: I've been spending a good amount of time figuring out the varying mechanics and feeling out the game before fully deciding on my build and playstyle and I must say it is STELLAR!!!!!
I've never been so impressed by all the varying mechanics in an RPG. WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!
The implementation of skills and abilities is unlike anything I've ever been exposed to. They affect each other and it is all logical and sensible and creates a unique experience. The Stealth mechanic is elaborate and deep and wholly rewarding (I almost never play stealthers in my RPGs, but, it is almost a MUST for me in this game it is so frikken good!) Also, people react to stealth in a variety of ways, like, a nice peaceful weaker person might see you stealthing and go "OMG SOMEONE SNEAKING AROUND!" and run away from you and never come back, and you won't know what they had to offer if you wouldn't have been such a sneaky bastard.
Exploration is PHENOMENALLY rewarding.
Role-playing is top-notch in the area of branching quest/story possibilities and combat mechanics.
There is an XP system that sets a new precedent for RPGs. They call it the "Oddity System", and while "classic" is still an option (where you get XP for killing mobs, finishing quests), it was made to use the oddity system. In the Oddity System, you get XP for discovering areas, completing quests, and finding items in the world (that are lore-based and add a great depth to the game.)
Any type of way you want to play is valid and rewarding. PLUS, there's a lot of non-violent resolutions to be had (if you've got the skills), or, not, if you want.
The "magic" system is exceptional. They call it PSIONICS and they are essentially mage skills, but, it's just done SO uniquely, and allows for combining with other abilities that you don't feel like a weakened mage-class. (ex: my build uses the damage PSI skill called "metathermics" and crossbows as my weapon whilst being a hacking stealther that is exceptional at persuasion/intimidation/mercantile, and it is a very viable/strong build.) Guns skills encompasses all types of guns, but in order to carry/use some, you need STR, so you can build around that, etc. The variety is great!
Mercantile is something I never choose in RPGs because who needs cheaper prices (and that is generally all it provides)? NOT so in this game, there's more to it in UnderRail that actually makes it appeal!
OH, and there's an in-depth crafting system that is very very cool and elaborate as well (crafting isn't something I'm into normally, but, it's pretty damn cool in this game!)
I could go on and on.
Long story short:
If you want an in-depth, supremely rewarding, unique, incredible RPG. PLAY
UNDERRAIL!
huge wiki that helps a lot That is one mouth-watering review. +1
