morolf: I hadn't played that many rpgs either when I first played Baldur's Gate 2 back in 2000 (iirc Albion was the only rpg I had played before), and I didn't have that many problems. Most "real" rpgs will be overwhelming at first, unless one is willing to invest some effort into learning the systems, there's no point to playing them.
morolf: THAC0 isn't that hard to understand, it's just the lower, the better...there's no need to grasp the mechanics in every detail.
Any complex party-based rpg will take some effort to get into, if one doesn't want that, one should play something else.

BigBobsBeepers: It depends on what you like. If you like hack and slash style ARPGs then maybe Diablo 1 or 2 might be up your alley. If you like simplistic "top down" style RPGs with some story the Avernum series and other Spiderweb Software games that post 5 mentions might be your speed.

There are also the fallout classic games which post 4 mentions which are very good once you take the time to get into them.

Also welcome to the forums. I am new as well but I "lurked" a bit by reading the site a bit before joining, but it seems a nice place to be.

mystikmind2000: Can't say i had that same problem? Because of the teleporter map system, you only ever need to clear an area once and you never have to clear it again if you dont want to.

The only reasons you would clear an area again is for more experience/loot or to complete a secondary mission, and if doing a secondary mission, you usually dont have to clear the whole area, just a quarter or half section of it and in adition to that, you can create your own temporary teleporters! (especially handy if you need to go to the inn and swap a party member and then go directly back to your original position)

Edit: I forgot to mention.... some of the secondary missions are a bit of a drag, and even though i have played through the game several times, there are a few that are just fuckstick impossible to complete (and i am too stubborn to google it)

dtgreene: (It's worth noting that, based on my understanding, that I don't really regard that game and games like Oblivion to be RPGs; the combat is too actiony and based off collisions and player skill rather than dice rolls.)

BigBobsBeepers: The secondary missions and also the immersion. I think it breaks immersion a bit to see the same exact number and placement of enemies the second or nth time through an area. You'd think killing a good number of them would reduce the repopulation of areas, not keep it constant.

mystikmind2000: Yea, but not all that much point to it.... because by the time your team is re-visiting areas, the level of the enemy is too low to be a threat and therefore the uniqueness of the enemy units becomes kinda moot - Whatever shape or form they take

where more randomized spawns would be more interesting, is if some of the creatures also leveled higher in proportion to your team!

dtgreene: That would require actually playing some RPGs, which is something that a beginner hasn't yet done.

(Also, remember that some RPGs break convention.)

Also, I think the game would actually be more interesting if you could easily use any weapon usable by your class without penaty; this would give you a more varied selection of weapons throughout the game, rather than sticking with the same weapon for a long time because the other interesting looking weapons that you've found aren't of the type you chose at the start.

mystikmind2000: Yea, i was thinking auto leveling for the boss critters only, and they can randomly change location and type when re spawn, and their strength can sometimes randomly come out as higher... that would liven things up!

The problem is with equipment sets.... it is almost always the case that by the time you managed to complete the set, it has become obsolete!

The way to solve that problem i believe is this... once you have 50% of a set, the spawn chance increases by 50%, once you have 80% of a set, the spawn chance becomes 80%.... that should pretty much guarantee you will get at least 'some' useful life out of a full set before it becomes obsolete.

I also liked how in that game they allowed for much higher inventory amounts through pets. That was a big help unlike the previous game and its very limited inventory. I would have made books take less slots in Dungeon Siege 2 though.

mystikmind2000: I dont remember the books? It has been a long time since i played the game.... last month i bought it on Steam but that Steam version wont run. Perhaps they will get it on GOG and do a better job?
