We also have both sides trying to counter each other, especially after Trent Ostner basically begged for positive reviews on the Beamdog forums. And he asked for both Steam and GOG. Not sure what GOG's policy is when such things are happening, but from what i recall Steam removed at least one game for review manipulation.

It wasn't going to be consistent even if you got the original writers. I think kickstarter has conclusively shown that only Molyneux is consistent, and not in a good way. Hell, I helped ship a game I was (and still am) a yooooge fan of and got a look at the writer's new project. As you've probably guessed (because I wouldn't bring it up as an example otherwise), it was the most boring and tepidly offensive shit imaginable, like a Nick Sparks book. And there was no timeskip; they were working on it right after, or probably at the same time as, the incredibly awesome game.

Despite me thinking it was pretty dumb adding that line in the first place it's not really that much of a jab- it's not like it's an evil psychopath such as Xzar who has been given the phrase. Minsc may be brain damaged, but he is essentially good natured.

On the other hand, adding in a transexual character is... somewhat off in a game where there is- literally- an item that will quite happily change your gender for you and where magic exists that can change sex so much so that a character actually gets their sex changed as a plot point. I actually suspect that is part of the problem, Bioware treated the sex change as an outright joke and I strongly suspect the new writer would have loved to change how that was handled, but they couldn't. It's a real world issue, but it simply doesn't fit in that fantasy world however you cut it, certainly breaks the fourth wall and definitely is a valid point of criticism.

The "expansion" (it's just a cheaply made DLC, come on) deserves all the negative reviews it's getting.
The issue with the shoehorned transperson is just the cherry on top.
It's not that you have a trans person. It's that this trans person is meant to "teach" you about the "real world". Basically, they are treating you like you are an imbecile, and by saying "it's not a real issue" then you're accepting that.

What's with the reviews which basically boil down to "I haven't even played this game for more than an hour, but I encountered a big bug SO THEREFORE DON'T BUY NOW" garbage which tell you nothing about the game itself? I wish I could put my arm through the monitor and strangle these retards.

The game is plagued with bugs, just as the "enhanced" editions were. There was absolutely no problem with any of the classic games sold here, Beamdog "reworked" the games just as a quick cashgrab. SoD has more than one bug, and if there's people complaining loudly about them it's because they had to wait like two years after the game was patched enough so it could be played in a somewhat bug-free manner from start to finish.

Adding some real life political social commentary into it sounds weak though (that part about Minsc commenting on GamerGate?). I'm surprised they didn't put some "DON'T VOTE FOR DONALD TRUMP!!!!" commentary there as well, that would have probably made about as much sense.

I think they got the reaction they anticipated and wanted, and this BGEE DLC will get recognition in all news media, including non-gaming news, of how the poor game makers got attacked by an angry mob of nerdy gamers who couldn't accept a transgender character in a game, or something. I bet we will hear later in the news how a game developer working on this game had to flee his/her/its home for their lives in the middle of the night because they allegedly got an angry tweet.

The gender neutral would be "to each their own". Perfectly acceptable in English, unsure about American.

It would still be better without such social commentary, but if that really was all... oh well. Most people will miss the jab anyway (I know I would have, even though I even know about GamerGate).
