The release date is usually a good hint. Everything released before 2010 doesn't support ultrawide resolutions; unless somebody made a mod for it (see quote below). And the list of later games that do (on GOG) is probably relatively small.

But what are you trying to say? You don't play games in a different aspect ratio? The amount of exclamation marks makes me think that you're just venting and have no interest in participating in your own topic. But I could be wrong...

If you maintain vertical resolution then you shouldn't have any scaling issues with the video quality, so the only issue is the black bars. Think of it like a movie, you're seeing the intended ratio. You certainly can't change a 4:3 pixel game like Mario Bros., for example.

Sometimes, if the gameplay isn't dependent on the aspect ratio, mods (or a 'remaster') can enlarge the width of the playing area. e.g. Baldur's Gate Enhanced or widescreen mod.
You give a good example; (old) platformers often triggered events when you passed a certain (horizontal) area.
Minimum required resolution would be good if it was mentioned.

Since GOG isn't about supporting games on old systems (old low resolution monitors), I don't think that that's going to happen.
I've heard of a few games that were made in a fixed resolution of 1920x1080. Does that mean your monitor or graphics card can't downscale it to e.g. 1366 x 768? (I have never played a game that needed downscaling)

When buying a monitor I make very sure it can scale well. Problem is cheap laptops and a bit older monitors. Not everyone in the world makes over €20,000 a year. If your income is more like a tenth of that, it is hard to afford new hardware.

I have a monitor from 2016 with all bells & whistles. Still, it doesn't do aspect ratio scaling by software (my previous monitor did). My guess: scaling features are moving from monitors to graphics cards.
If income is your argument, a(n) (upgradable) desktop is still cheaper than a comparable laptop.

Which is why that is what I game on. In some places in the world every cubic millimetre of living space costs a lot and then probably only laptop is feasible.

Did not know about scaling driven from graphics card nowadays but this still applies: Some monitors look really bad if the resolution is not native or dividible by four. To some degree this applies to all tft screens but some are much worse than others.

It's a matter of priorities. When I was a student, I lived in a place not much bigger than an average (western) bathroom. Still, I loved playing games, so I made room for my desktop PC.
Ok, I'm talking about adults. If you're a minor still living with your parents... it sucks, I've been there.

Newer Nvidia and AMD (I don't know about Intel) graphics cards now do integer scaling. ;-)
It doesn't matter how bad your monitor scales if the graphics card handles it.

Yeah I meant when that isn't possible, which is relatively common for ultrawide as far as I know.

You've been here for 12 years, from back then when this place was all about old games and stuff - and you seem a bit clueless. I don't get it, actually.

Maybe he got a free game for registering? 12 years later > pandemic > boredom :-P
And here I am stuck in 1920 x 1080 like some past plebian.

What, do you have one of those fancy "retina" monitors that does some internal trickery?
