General Troubleshooting
-----------------------

If you're experiencing black screen / crash on launch, please try the following:

- Before starting the game, change video resolution to your desktop one (or the closest match). if that fails, try falling back to 1024x768. Video settings can be found under GOG Galaxy HERE
-- or in Start Menu HERE.
- Close any unnecessary applications running in the background, especially ones overlay-based like EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner, GeForce Experience, FRAPS etc.
- If running multiple screen setup, try switching to a single monitor.

If none of the above helps, please send your DxDiag to our Support team HERE. The more information we have, the easier it will be to pinpoint the problem.

May the Force serve you well.

Odarnok_Leunam: GOG gives me this solution. Thanks GOG Support:

Thank you for trying the troubleshooting steps. Our Product Team is investigating the issue and looking for a fix.

Could you check if replacing the ddraw.dll file with dgVoodoo2 dll files makes the game work better?
You can download dgVoodoo2 from:
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html
or an archive with just the required dll files from:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cczl8ge6r0c7rh9/dgVoodoo2_55.zip?dl=0

Place the 3 dll files in the game's directory (in the Galaxy Client click the game, click MORE > Manage installation > Show folder), for the offline installer the default is:
C:\GOG Games\STAR WARS Racer
You might want to make a backup of the ddraw.dll file first.

Please let me know if this helps.

Genoan

Oh my god I downloaded the 3 DLL and paste it on my folder. I launch the video settings then launch the game, it works ! Thank you ! :D
Thank you for releasing this gem of a game. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

A couple of things however (on Windows 10)

The cut scenes for the final race of each row cannot be skipped. This leads to a frustrating 60 seconds plus of watching them every time. More importantly however, the end credits can;t be skipped either. So this means that if you play the boonta eve track, you have to watch the 60 second champion crowning, and then the entire end credits. If you could make these skip-able, it would be appreciated.

Second, when crossing the finish line, more often than not the game jarringly and suddenly drops you to the pod select page via a short blue or green screen. Rather than staying in the race with the camera following your pod while you wait for other racers to finish.

Some of the controls are finicky to set up also on a gamepad, and the vibrate function isn't working. But I guess there's only so much you can do.

Lastly, a quick question. Is there anyway you can keep making money after completing the main championship? Or do you have to start a new profile and start again each time? It would be nice to be able to fully max out ever pod racer within a single profile.....
Thanks GOG! only game that made me feel like I was racing strapped to a rocket, been bummed for years that the original copy I have doesn't work, now I can play one of my favorite past times again.

yautja15: Some of the controls are finicky to set up also on a gamepad, and the vibrate function isn't working. But I guess there's only so much you can do.
This is likely due to the age of the game, as it would be expecting a DirectInput device, and modern devices are XInput. If you have a device that can switch between modes, DirectInput mode should get you the force feedback and correctly mapped axes. If you don't have a device that can switch modes (like an Xbox 360 Controller) then the only way I know to get it to work like a DirectInput device is via a program called XInput Plus.

XInput Plus lets you split the trigger axis of an XInput Controller into two separate analog axes, and it has some ability to translate the DirectInput Force Feedback into XInput Rumble. It doesn't seem to be a very well known tool - I found out about it from the PCGamingWiki here:

https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Controller#XInput_Plus

It can be a little tricky to set up, but I've used it successfully with quite a few old DirectInput games now.

Lucumo: ed. It's your fault if you expect it to work properly on a terrible OS
They LITERALLY advertise it as "compatible with Windows10".

Im not some neckbeard who only lives in the computer-world, I dont care what OS is considerd "bad" or "good". Win10 is widespread, GOG says the game works with Win10, but it doesnt.

GOG test the games on their machines and only release them if they get them working, so it must have passed their Windows 10 tests otherwise they wouldn't have released it.

They cannot change the games themselves, they don't have the source code and they aren't games programmers (they are a digital distributor), but they can use community fixes and compatibility settings and such, that they then implement within the installers. This can sometimes require administrator access on the computer. For Episode 1 Racer there are known community fixes and DirectDraw wrappers. The PCGamingWiki even mentions dgVoodoo2 as a way of getting proper emulated old DirectX support for the game and to allow it to run properly on Windows 8 and Windows 10, so clearly other people have got the game running on Windows 10 (as has tinyE). I've not seen GOG use dgVoodoo2 though, which might be because it requires a DX11 graphics card.

However, PCs have so many different combinations of hardware and software installations that it is impossible to test a game on every single possible Windows 10 PC setup. For all we know there could be some software installation on your machine that is causing the issue, or a driver conflict, or a corrupted Windows file, a missing component/feature (like legacy DirectPlay, which used to have to be activated from the Windows 10 Control Panel but I have seen recently some GOG installers that turn this on for you), or a failed installation of the game. It could be the install location causing the issue if it is a protected system folder that you've used. It could be some overlay software, or screen refresh rate. If you carried out an upgrade installation of Windows 10 from a previous Windows (rather than a fresh installation) then that might cause issues.

And even if you try all their suggested fixes and workarounds, if you still can't get it to work they will refund you, so that you aren't left out of pocket.

What has this to do with the discussion we are having? The person I agreed with quoted your "Ever since switching to win10 lots of GOG games dont work anymore [...]" and that's obviously also what I'm talking about.
As for the rest, I already said: "If someone buys it for Windows 10 and it's marked as working for Windows 10 and then it doesn't, they can always request a refund."

Anyway, other people can run Episode I: Racer on Windows 10 (see tinyE as an example). Also take a look at Korell's post which is pretty good.
Shit, I used to be good at this game. :P
Okay, so I just bought the game and installed it (it prompted for elevated privileges). I installed to my usual games folder on my secondary hard drive. It went through the usual installation, installed DirectX 9.0c, and then I exited the installer after it finished (rather than launching the game straight away).

I then used the Video Settings tool to set the game to use a screen resolution of 1680x1050 (I'm on an old 16:10 monitor that I really need to replace) and I connected my Xbox 360 controller.

Then I launched the game and it started up just fine, though the cutscene videos are rather small as they aren't scaled, but at least they are centred on the screen.

Once the menu came up I navigated to the joystick settings and enabled it, and set the default controls to which I then tweaked them slightly.

Lastly, I started up a single player free play race and it played just fine (but I finished in 4th place as I crashed too often trying to use the roll function and working out how the boost works), though the axis I've set for rolling left/right is inverted, which is due to the game being DirectInput and my controller being XInput.

I'm on Windows 10 Home Edition.

I might try using XInput Plus to see if I can get a better controller setup and to allow me to get some Rumble in place of Force Feedback.

UPDATE: Well, I cannot get XInput Plus to work with this game. Using the DirectInput Output option works in the program itself, but the game doesn't identify it as a controller so can't make use of it. Meanwhile, trying to use it to invert the right stick axes has so far failed as roll left and right remain the wrong way around. Even disabling the right stick completely in XInput Plus, the game still picks it up, so I suspect something else is taking the input. Though I know XInput Plus is being called when the game starts as it beeps on starting the game to let you know it is active.

UPDATE 2: Further tests with XInput Plus, such as swapping the D-Pad and Right Stick are also making no difference, so I can only conclude that something else (DirectPlay, maybe?) is getting in the way, preventing the remappings of XInput Plus from being picked up. Oh well, it's still very playable (and I've managed to get a fastest lap time on that first test track of 54 seconds).

The game is pretty easy though. I've never played it before (and pretty much never play racing games) and finished first every time except on the track "Abyss" which has an annoying section which can easily make you not win.

@Korell: I used my PS2-Controller and had no issues whatsoever. Axis can also be inverted in the option menu (not that rolling is needed at all in the game anyway).

I just finished it, though not as quickly as I did when I bought it years ago. Only one track gave me fits but I eventually got through it.

Which track was that? Since the vehicle is always super responsive, one only really needs a good reaction time to get through the game. Too bad it has no multiplayer via servers.

The Abyss. You need to stay on the upper track or you miss the shortcut and go from 1st to 10th instantly.
