TheAvatar.783: No, apparently not. For some reason my brain glitched and I thought it was, but it seems I was mistaken. I'll be sure to have the offending neurons punished with a hearty dosing of vodka ;-)
Anime-BlackWolf: "Death Gate" WAS here, but was pulled afterwards, we can assume problems with the licence. :(
Yes, thank you. I remember now I was in a discussion about "Companions" following the release of "Death Gate" (which included my hope that "Mission Critical" would soon follow). Hence my confusion.
I was unaware that "Death Gate" was removed from GOG. That's a shame. Personally, I didn't really like Death Gate, but it had pretty good production values. It wasn't much fun to play but it was nice enough to look at (and listen to).
Hopefully "Mission Critical" won't follow "Death Gate's" example. Licensing old games can be difficult, especially if those old games were based on licensed properties themselves. In "Death Gate's" case, not only was there the game's original publisher to deal with, but also the holder of the intellectual property (the authors, Weis & Hickman), the current holder of video game IP (so whoever owns Legend Entertainment these days), and other partners as well (for instance, Random House had an investment in Legend Entertainment, and the publishers of the Death Gate novels might also have had a say). Any one of them could have nixed the deal or demanded more money than it would be worth to bring the games to market, so it is amazing that it cleared all those hurdles - even briefly - in the first place! Hurrah to GOG for navigating that legal maze. Hopefully these issues will be resolved and "Death Gate" will return to market soon; my opinion of the game aside, I dislike losing access to gaming history because of trifling legalities.
Since "Mission Critical" was a new IP created by Legend, one might assume the licensing might be slightly more straight-forward, except that the inclusion of live-action actors may complicate things. There may be clauses in the contracts of Michael Dorn (or the other actors) which give them some say over the publishing rights and royalties.
Fortunately, I grabbed the" Death Gate" as soon as it was released (largely to inspire GOG and the publishers to release other Legend games, namely "Mission Critical". Looks like it worked! :-) So though "Death Gate" is currently no longer available on the GOG marketplace, I still have it in my library. And of course, I purchased "Mission Critical" as soon as I saw it, so that one is safe too. But I really hope "Mission Critical" doesn't get pulled, because I think it's an awesome game that didn't get nearly enough attention when it was new, and I really hope more players get to appreciate it now.
