In the year 2134, if man is still alive...

Mission Critical is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.
You appear to be the only survivor. As your ship was cruising through space on a mission that would potentially end the 50-year-long civil war back on Earth, an attack left you all alone to fix your ship by solving dozens of puzzles, and to keep the nefarious UN at bay at all costs (some rudimentary RTS skills required here). Do you think you can still make it to Persephone and unlock the powers of the enigmatic alien artifact?

TheAvatar.783: When the other Legend Interactive titles - Companions" of Xanth", the "Spellcasting" series - started showing up on GOG, I knew it was only a matter of time.

No, apparently not. For some reason my brain glitched and I thought it was, but it seems I was mistaken. I'll be sure to have the offending neurons punished with a hearty dosing of vodka ;-)

"Death Gate" WAS here, but was pulled afterwards, we can assume problems with the licence. :(

Isn't it perhaps the prior punishing that made them glitch in the first place?

History suggests that if the first is true, the second will be, as well.
Another gem arrived to GOG catalog! Keep 'em coming Piko Interactive & GOG team.
Piko has gotten their hands on quite a few oldies. Some rather obscure interesting ones too like Last Rites, which plays like a prototype for Left 4 Dead.

I hope the mysterious overly-cautious and picky GOG curators don't skimp out on us.

Anime-BlackWolf: "Death Gate" WAS here, but was pulled afterwards, we can assume problems with the licence. :(
Yes, thank you. I remember now I was in a discussion about "Companions" following the release of "Death Gate" (which included my hope that "Mission Critical" would soon follow). Hence my confusion.

I was unaware that "Death Gate" was removed from GOG. That's a shame. Personally, I didn't really like Death Gate, but it had pretty good production values. It wasn't much fun to play but it was nice enough to look at (and listen to).

Hopefully "Mission Critical" won't follow "Death Gate's" example. Licensing old games can be difficult, especially if those old games were based on licensed properties themselves. In "Death Gate's" case, not only was there the game's original publisher to deal with, but also the holder of the intellectual property (the authors, Weis & Hickman), the current holder of video game IP (so whoever owns Legend Entertainment these days), and other partners as well (for instance, Random House had an investment in Legend Entertainment, and the publishers of the Death Gate novels might also have had a say). Any one of them could have nixed the deal or demanded more money than it would be worth to bring the games to market, so it is amazing that it cleared all those hurdles - even briefly - in the first place! Hurrah to GOG for navigating that legal maze. Hopefully these issues will be resolved and "Death Gate" will return to market soon; my opinion of the game aside, I dislike losing access to gaming history because of trifling legalities.

Since "Mission Critical" was a new IP created by Legend, one might assume the licensing might be slightly more straight-forward, except that the inclusion of live-action actors may complicate things. There may be clauses in the contracts of Michael Dorn (or the other actors) which give them some say over the publishing rights and royalties.

Fortunately, I grabbed the" Death Gate" as soon as it was released (largely to inspire GOG and the publishers to release other Legend games, namely "Mission Critical". Looks like it worked! :-) So though "Death Gate" is currently no longer available on the GOG marketplace, I still have it in my library. And of course, I purchased "Mission Critical" as soon as I saw it, so that one is safe too. But I really hope "Mission Critical" doesn't get pulled, because I think it's an awesome game that didn't get nearly enough attention when it was new, and I really hope more players get to appreciate it now.
OMG YAY! This game is so great. It has this drone tactical combat part that is AMAZING, and could've been its own game.
Unless they put some of those in some sort of a retro pack, I don't see that many people jumping to get them.

---edit--

They actually seem to have a retro pack, so that's good.

So what you are saying is that - since they didn't learn the lesson last time - I should use something stronger this time?

I like the way you think!

Anime-BlackWolf: How many Legend adventure games WITHOUT a licence are left?

- Shannara -> Book licence
- Gateway 1+2 -> Licence (books?)
- Companions of Xanth -> Licence (book?)
- Callahan's Crosstime Saloon -> Licence
- The Wheel of Time -> Licence

That brings us to "Time Quest" and "Superhero League of Hoboken" and nothing more I am afraid... :(
Unfortunately we can also add John Saul's The Blackstone Chronicles to the above list. :(

Fond memories of this game. It really feels like you are there.

Played it to the end, even for someone whose favorite genre is not that of graphic adventures.

Got it from Home of the Underdogs a few years ago for what back then was already an old computer. Good that GOG is offering it. Probably the original version might find some trouble to run well on current PCs.

From HOTU:

http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/game.php?name=Mission%20Critical

"Mission Critical is an engrossing game that may be the best original hard sci-fi game ever created. As lone survivor of the ship's crew sent to find alien technology to avert the course of war, you must survive the ship's malfunctions and complete the mission. Puzzles are easier than normal, perhaps due to a vastly simplified interface, but the excellent and complex plot more than makes up for it. There is also a surprisingly well-designed strategy game-within-a-game and great performance by Michael Dorn (Worf in Star Trek: TNG)."
When I saw that title, I hoped it was a remake of Impossible Mission :-P
Hmm. Looks interesting
One of the better games from Legend.

In case you are scared of the RTS sequences, I can safely say that I am one of those guys that got killed in the Dawn of War tutorial and that never got further than 3 missions in any of the many, many RTS I've owned, and the Mission Critical one is really easy.
