The game is not bad at all, I must understand that it is pretty accurate to the original N64 port.
Well, retro console controls aside, with mouse and keyboard this version seems to be easier than rest of Dooms at least the first coulple of scenarios. Probably later in the game I will eat my own words, indeed, but It's a feel I have. I am liking it. Never played the N64 version before and I am going to have a fun weekend.

About the performance I discovered that if I run the game under Galaxy the performance drops a lot. Lags and stutters, micropauses, not very playable etc... I will see if later things improve.
But If I run the game out of Galaxy the performance is very good and fruid, and considering that I do not fill the minimum requirements at all I can't complain about.
Instabuy, great surprise and big thank you, GOG & Bethesda! :)
Nice release. Got this on my wishlist on Steam and was going to buy it there. Picked it up here instead.
high rated
Works on w7 in case anyone was wondering.
Great to see this here, Was one of the first games I got when I picked up an N64 back in the day. The atmosphere was quite fresh a Doom game, always had that slightly unsettling feeling.
Well it's not 2016, but yeah I took it and I'm gonna play some before I collapse into bed
XD
yes it feels and play well
it's actually a very good GOG release, this one...

Spectrum_Legacy: I thought so too, esp. after seeing that only the BFG edition landed on GOG back then. It's surprising that bathesda didn't remove the original version on steam, but I guess they are aware of people who simply don't buy into "improved graphics and gameplay of BFG edition" which is like a meme now, considering that the old version actually has higher quality native textures than the BFG and allows higher graphical settings among other things.

As long as the original is up for sale, then it's good - I just wish that gog would sell what many consider the best version, instead of what bathesda calls the superior version. However as it seems, not everyone gets that and we can't choose here.
Makes me glad I kept my physical CD boxed copy that my girlfriend bought for me for Christmas 2004 when I could not afford it.

If Steam has it too, then great, I guess. But GOG should too. But the powers that be at Bethesda really don't seem to care, as they are focused only on huge profits. It would probably be as simple as telling an underling to send the files over, but they can't be bothered.

Anyway, yes, I have played both versions, and there are MASSIVE differences, at least to me.

I am actually happy that both versions exist, because depending on my mood, I have enjoyed both of them. The real crime here is that, as you already stated, we the GOG-loyal are not allowed to choose.

I think original Doom 3 + RoE would sell even better than some other Bethesda games already released here, so it's interesting what Bethesda allows for release on GOG. https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games#search=doom%203&order=votes_total
I already have this on Switch, but I might actually play it here. Good catch.

sanscript: All in all I can not fathom why Bethesda decided to practically ruin the game(s) like that... how about SEGA remastered Alien: Isolation and turned on a huge amount of light sources and added plentiful ammo, health and stuff, so you basically could play with the alien like it was SUPERTED?
I think their decisions were based on trying to make it a more speedy action game, even though it wasn't designed for that. Very reactionary to the internet complaints, like most companies sadly. Deus Ex HR's Director's Cut did the same, yanking the gold filter and shoving the DLC in like a lot of complainers wanted, never mind that the game wasn't designed for either.
Nice!
Just need doom 2016, Doom Eternal and quake 1 re-masted on gog now to complete my collection.

This game just confuses me. It's like bringing the SNES Doom game forward, the sheer limitations of the cartridges/ROMS does make me wonder how much you can put into them, but wouldn't it be better to just get Ultimate Doom? Doom64 should be better as a bonus item if you have Doom, not a separate game.

It's not the N64 version, but a port of it, and Doom 64 is a different game. It's not a console port of Ultimate Doom or anything. Kind of like how the PC version and console versions of Powerslave are not the same. (And the PC port of the console Powerslave was released here recently.)
Thanks for DOOM 64 ... a nice surprise.

I suspect that we are not going to get QEE here now, that they eventually realized it was gonna take too much work to make it acceptable for GOG customers, and they did not want to repeat what happened with Hitman GOTY.

So perhaps DOOM 64 is a bit like a peace offering ... kind of in place of QEE. Negate the negative with a positive.

DOOM 64 is significantly different to the other original DOOM games, so not just a cutback version to work on the N64 console.
