advancedhero: The thing that intrigues me is the setting. I mean, realistic 15th century Germany? That sounds awesome.
Indeed. The lack of a fancy theme like fantasy or science fiction (although I desperately want a CRPG party Isometric with a sci-fi theme!) hopefully pushed the designers to focus on substance.

It's got an awesome soundtrack too especially run with Roland MT-32 and FLAC. :)

Nirth: I also enjoy RTwP more than turn based. I don't know any upcoming games that will have that but hopefully something. It's a pity they chose turn based for Torment Tides of Numenera if I recall correctly (the poll was like 55/45).
Pillars of Eternity is using the same engine as Torment: Tides of Numenera and is supposed to be RTwP.

paladin181: Dragon Age Origins is probably the last major one, and then they had DA2 and Inquisition that are pretty much RT IIRC. Really kinda pissed me off, though I guess it hit a mark because most people I discuss them with love that they are RT and think the combat is "Much improved!!"
The combat system in DA II and Inquisition is good on consoles but I wouldn't want to play the PC versions without a gamepad.

I could have sworn that Torment: ToN was strickly turnbased (much to the chagrin of some in the community)? Or were you just saying that Pillars and Torment use the same engine, and Pillars is real time with pause?
I've been playing FFXIII but haven't tried to pause during combat yet.
Unless you mean Pause>Program>Run

Then you have :

Drakensang 1 & 2
The Baldurs Gate Series
Icewind Dale Series
A Farewell to Dragons
The Dragon Age Series
Final Fantasy XII
Confrontation
Arklash Legacy

The latter.
Torment: TON is unfortunately all turn based, a huge disappointment for me. I'm really glad I didn't end up backing the game.
Pillars of Eternity is supposed to be real time with pause, so that's definitely a game I'm looking forward to.

I'm with you here as well - I've never done the kickstarter thing but this was a game that had my attention for a long time. Really excited for its release. Torment is one I'm sure I'll look into, but it seems like it's a lot further away from the source than I originally thought it was going to be - but it's hard to live up to all that is Sigil, its background and all the lore that went into Planescape.

Oddly enough another game (for me at least) that has the weird, really moving stories and attention to detail - wow the name is totally escaping me right now - of Planescape was one with a main character named Kaim (Ka-Ime as in time) and it was penned in part by someone with ties to the "classic" Final Fantasies - highly touted Xbox 360 game that I don't remember being that much of a success. But it had these wonderful, often non sequitur and moving little stories peppered throughout. Very fun game - with gameplay not unlike another classic, Shadowhearts (similar turnbased combat with a quick time interactive element). Wow, haven't thought of this one in years, wonder why it popped in my head now LOL!

For sure! Thank you so much it was actually really bugging me! I spent a ton of time with the game and I can't believe I forgot the name LOL.

I haven't played A Farewell to Dragons, Confrontation, Arklash, or the Drakensang games. I've been meaning to get Drakensang for a while. Thanks for the recommendations.
It's not what you're talking about, but I can think of one unusual real time RPG with pause: the N64 fighting/RPG game Hybrid Heaven. You wouldn't believe any description about the game I could possibly type, so if you have the time, check a LP and jump ahead a few vids to see one of the later battles.
Are you looking for something like King's Bounty?

I think if it matters for you whether combat is TB or RTwP, it's not the game for you, anyway^^ I backed it and am looking forward to it.
I also am looking forward to see Pillars of Eternity. My hopes for the game are quite high.
Did you back/pre-order it?

Honestly, that statement pisses me off. Planescape: Torment is probably my favorite game ever made, so I was looking forward to Tides Of Numenera. But, I'm done buying turn based RPGs for over $10. TB games usually make fights mandatory, and that's not always a good thing. Shadow Run was the last straw for me, there's nothing worse than a game with a unique setting and interesting story, that ends up forcing players into boring and difficult combat situations that last more than an hour.
In Planescape: Torment combat was not the central focus of most of the game. A player could sneak past or run away from almost any fight, excluding some bosses. There are several parts of Planescape: Torment that would have been extremely annoying if it were a TB game. Take for instance the Modron Cube, it would've sucked getting Nordom with a lower level party if you had to kill every single high threat construct. I like running away from fights if my characters are weak, even kill crazy games like Diablo allow that. Turn based usually is synonymous with fighting to the death. Some TB games, like Final Fantasy, are player friendly enough to have a flee option, but that's not the norm anymore. Either way, turn based combat is definitely not my preference for RPGs and often determines if I will buy a game or not.

I pre-ordered Pillars of Eternity: Champion Edition. Even if it turns out to be a disappointment, what the developers are trying to do with that game is cool and they deserve money for their efforts in trying to resurrect Infinity Engine style gaming.

I haven't gotten around to playing Drakensang yet. I was waiting to see if it would end up on GOG, but I hear the CD version is DRM free, so I'll probably just order that off of Amazon soon.

MorningStar33: Are you looking for something like King's Bounty?
No, but that's one of the few newer turn based game series I actually like. It's vastly superior to the more recent HOMM games.
I'm looking more for something along the lines of Baldur's Gate.

As far as T:ToN is concerned, you are possibly wrong. Encounters happen in the way of a so called 'crisis' and combat is not (always) the only solution to get past it.
Information from the devs about this are rather vague, at least from what I've read. But it's not gonna be the average game-freeze-and-fight-to-death thing.
Check tormentrpg dot com if that interests you.
And: Torment and Pillars use the same basic engine, so maybe it will even be possible to mod the game into RTwP (probably depends on how these crises are implemented I guess)
