jdsgn: I think if it matters for you whether combat is TB or RTwP, it's not the game for you, anyway^^
Honestly, that statement pisses me off. Planescape: Torment is probably my favorite game ever made, so I was looking forward to Tides Of Numenera. But, I'm done buying turn based RPGs for over $10. TB games usually make fights mandatory, and that's not always a good thing. Shadow Run was the last straw for me, there's nothing worse than a game with a unique setting and interesting story, that ends up forcing players into boring and difficult combat situations that last more than an hour.
In Planescape: Torment combat was not the central focus of most of the game. A player could sneak past or run away from almost any fight, excluding some bosses. There are several parts of Planescape: Torment that would have been extremely annoying if it were a TB game. Take for instance the Modron Cube, it would've sucked getting Nordom with a lower level party if you had to kill every single high threat construct. I like running away from fights if my characters are weak, even kill crazy games like Diablo allow that. Turn based usually is synonymous with fighting to the death. Some TB games, like Final Fantasy, are player friendly enough to have a flee option, but that's not the norm anymore. Either way, turn based combat is definitely not my preference for RPGs and often determines if I will buy a game or not.
jdsgn: I also am looking forward to see Pillars of Eternity. My hopes for the game are quite high.
Did you back/pre-order it?
I pre-ordered Pillars of Eternity: Champion Edition. Even if it turns out to be a disappointment, what the developers are trying to do with that game is cool and they deserve money for their efforts in trying to resurrect Infinity Engine style gaming.
jdsgn: Did you play Drakensang? Did you like it?
I haven't gotten around to playing Drakensang yet. I was waiting to see if it would end up on GOG, but I hear the CD version is DRM free, so I'll probably just order that off of Amazon soon.
MorningStar33: Are you looking for something like King's Bounty?
No, but that's one of the few newer turn based game series I actually like. It's vastly superior to the more recent HOMM games.
I'm looking more for something along the lines of Baldur's Gate.
