Who3D: Not quite true, as by announcing it here they could stop some of us from running over to Steam (a competitor) and buying there. Moreover they might convince some of us with only the original physical Quake to buy from GOG immediately, trusting that the upgrade will be on the way "soon".
This might not amount to much, but it's also not nothing.
When I said nothing to gain, I was talking about the bigger picture, and for that you need to look at the very minimal short term gain you mention as a possibility, compared to the bigger longer term penalty for being wrong. This might not amount to much, but it's also not nothing.
As it is trust has been eroded, and many have been upset over this with GOG, and some have indeed purchased elsewhere when it became pretty clear that GOG aren't getting the Enhanced version any time soon, maybe never, so by my reckoning GOG are indeed worse off due to it all. So in short they lost more than any likely gain.
