mbeemer: You may want to know that Al Lowe was not involved in the making of this game.
After the trouble he had with Reloaded, I doubt he'll ever make another one.

I'm glad another LSL game is being released nonetheless.
Leisure Suit Larry is probably the least suitable game in the world to have a tumblr-fied looking art style....and yet they went with this.

Maybe it's an ingenious subversion and by the end Larry finally settles down, marries, has kids and his outdated franchise dies with him.

edit: Haha of course this was made in Germany. The final bastion of point & click Gedankengut.

pbaggers: I had no idea that a new Leisure Suit Larry game was coming. (Not a pun)
Good puns never get old.
"Make Leisure Suit Larry come again!" was the Kickstarter slogan for the re-re-re-re-make of the first Larry game.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leisuresuitlarry/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again

That game didn't quite reach the climax, and left players unsatisfied, so it remains to be seen whether this new game will erect Larry's franchise again. (some puns may have been included)

pbaggers: Whether or not I care depends ultimately on whether or not Al Lowe was involved here. I get the feeling, just from looking at it - that he wasn't. This reeks of being yet another nostalgia-based cash in by whoever currently owns the IP.
He wasn't, and maybe it's good that way too. The world is 30 years different now, Al Lowe is 30 years older, I'm sure he could repeat the same jokes, but could he actually innovate something new? At least the completely new team may be able to do that, although they can just completely ruin everything, it can go both ways.

pbaggers: The online-dating based premise sounds stupid. Speaking from personal experience - Larry would almost certainly just be ignored and blocked by every girl he so much as says "hi" to. There wouldn't even be any potentially funny rejection or response to a faux-pas on Larry's part, just nothing.
I think there's potential there.
We don't know how he's doing it, after all. He can be using someone else's photo knowingly, or by accident. Or, he can be using that as a woman! It wouldn't be the first time that the plotline has made him disguise as a woman.
It remains to be seen. I can also imagine a very funny animated sequence where hundreds of women swipe him left on Timber.
Maybe this is a continuation for "dating habits of the era", as back in the day Larry also participated in a TV dating show.

pbaggers: Also what's with his character design? This is like the least unattractive looking take on Larry I've ever seen.
"Least unattractive" = most handsome?
I think he was pretty normal in LSL3, at least?
In any case, that character design really doesn't feel like Larry, but maybe it's better when it's all in-game.

pmcollectorboy: This is... bizarre. Why such a drastic shift in art style?
They explained Larry's new "look" in one of their behind the scenes youtube videos. Basically they said that the girls in the series were always kind of realistic looking, whereas Larry turned more and more into a gnomish caricature. So they decided to make the girls slightly more cartoonish and Larry more "realistic"-looking, thereby creating uniform art style.

ORDNUNG MUSS SEIN!!!

yeah, it's like an someone threw the leisure suit larry 2012 remake through a dimensional rift and this is what emerged.

that's not a criticism or anything, it's just a bit... out of the blue.

that said, as a fan of the series, ill keep my fingers crossed that this is good.

Imo a bad idea. It was the whole point of the series: a loser - looking and behaving like one - trying to "get" girls so far ourt of reach that he simply could not win the "game" under normal circumstances.

Meh, as pathetic as Larry was, at least he never sank as low as begging a starlet for sex while jerking off into a potted plant.

There is actually a Greek singer who is a dead ringer for cartoon Larry. Say hello to Lefteris Pantazis.

If he did that, the game would be called "Leisure Suite tinyE".

Vythonaut: Funny thing is that the series were already targeted by feminists back then. Not sure what will happen today; other than a couple of gaming websites that may get annoyed and maybe set their comment sections on fire (because advertising!), probably nothing will happen.
avatar
Telika: Actually, the militant feminists that I know are, on the opposite, huge fans of Leisure Suit Larry.

And I'm not even sure why they shouldn't be (but I've only played the first three).
But really, it's just a game -- no reason for anyone to be annoyed. Having said that, i'm nearly a stranger to the series myself; only played Love for Sail back then; generally, i'm not big on comedy adventure games and i usually prefer the more "serious" ones.

You could say the same about movies - does not help though - some people simply are annoyed that some things are the way they are.

That's not a great argument. Any cultural product carries (and reinforces) cultural representations. They are what shape our perceptions of the world. "It's just a film/joke/poster/discourse/book/fairy tale" would be (and often is) a cheap excuse to justify all sort of propaganda, or to escape the responsability of a statement.

But in that specific case, I don't think that these games carry anything devious. They are mostly parodies of sexist worldviews and quests, and the female characters are usually more "human" than Larry - which is part of the humour. I remember, for instance, Larry trying to seduce a girl by making her ingest an aphrodisiac : the product works, but the suddely horny girl runs away to go find her own boyfriend. That's funny, cute, clever, and ridicules porn logic. I remember this as the general tone of the series.

What I meant is that the content itself isn't "offensive". It's more of a satire on actually "offensive" narratives. I'm not surprised by the sympathy that the feminists I know hold for this series.

Even if it were offensive. If I don't like it I don't play/watch/read it. I really cannot understand the problem tbh. since playing a game, watching a movie or reading a book is not hurting anyone. It might be a different thing if I would ACT like those in the movie/game/book.

If someone makes a game called Lorena Bobbitt Does Hollywood, I'll preorder. ;p
