This isn't really something worth discussing anymore but I've been out of the drama loop I guess so maybe it has somehow become relevant again... seems unlikely tho. However if you want a fairly balanced synopsis just look up Philip DeFranco Gamergate and he does a brief overview

Me too I tried to understand but after reading some articles on this mess I just gave up. It's a storm in a tea cup.

First sentence in the article:

Clearly, fair and even handed journlolism!

two groups of people shouting at each other over the interwebs, both proclaiming the other group is morally bankrupt. much silliness ensures.

Both sides are mostly comprised of idiots, neither are worth listening to, nothing has really changed (or will) games are still games and you buy and play them if you enjoy them.

If you've managed to not know or hear anything about it so far then you are one of the lucky ones, I'd continue to do what ever you were doing and ignore the whole thing.

It's really just yet another neckbeard vs. tumblrina pissing match that got way out of hand. For the sake of your sanity, avoid at all costs.

Except "a" and "b" are a dog whistle. It started because of the lack of transparency from the games "journalists" about their connections (i.e. personal relationships) to devs and publishers of games that were being reveiwed and reported on. And then the trolls on both extremes came and it was like watching rabid hyenas eat themselves

GamerGate fought for ethics in game journalism. It was a noble endeavor that ended with a pyrrhic victory for them. People are aware of the marxist agenda to shape entertainment in their grotesque image but the gamers were unable to stop them effectively.

NPC meme (aka Philosophical Zombie theory) started, and identity politics people got triggered on both sides, but mostly the left 'cause the right adopted it faster.

Final lessons being don't trust mainstream journalism (including faux gaming journalists with hack media relations related degrees) and the other being don't get into 'open' relationships with multi-colored haired women who wear lip rings. You engage in either activity at your own peril.

Was : A valid gaming reviews ethical concerns, triggered by an invalid case which happened to resonate too much with gamers sexual frustrations and intimate anxieties.

Became : A very hijack-able political platform used by the extreme-right, and shifting the concerns from nepotism and corruption in gaming journalism to progressive common sense in journalism. Targets became "marxism", "feminism", "lgbt rights", "antiracism", "political correctness", "migration", etc. Figures such as Putin, Trump and his vocal public militants (Yiannopoulos, etc) became models, while the movement fell back on its "gaming corruption" origins whenever this hijacking was pointed out.

Is now : An old trolling keyword, for moderation-less forums.
