It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Darvond: I am tired of people worrying that Windows 10 is somehow spyware. Are that many people up to that much legally questionable stuff? Do they really think Microsoft really gives a flying toss about the porn they watch? Not to mention, if these same people kept updates on, they've already joined the telemetrics. Not to mention, many of you probably have a Facebook anyway.

Also, I've never had any software vanish under mysterious circumstances on WIndows 10. Remember to download your software from the actual sources, people. :V Not C-Net or whatever mysterious place you procured them from. Check the URLs, too. Sure, I've had SmartScreen appear a few times and try and stop me from running software so fresh that the paint was still drying, but you can negotiate with that. I've had no issues whatsoever with Windows 10 otherwise.

To put it more neatly, I'm both a nihilist and sage when it comes to my data.

Not only do I not really know or care what data there is, but also, I'm not even sure any of it matters. It isn't like I'm torrenting 40 TB of Estonian fetish pornography. And even if I was, I bet that'd make Microsoft mark my data as invalid for inquiry and discard the lot, seeing as I'm not a consumer they're interested in.
In my case I just don't wanna upgrade my PC to Windows 10 because of Compatibility reasons.

I still have my Diablo 1 installed with the Color Fix patch and I have my Morrowind patched with the Graphics Extender. And the sudden upgrade can somehow ruin the games/programs.

And I have heard cases of the upgrade from 7/8 to 10 has bricked some people's PCs entirely.

If I want a Windows 10 Computer Device, I'd just buy a new PC that has one, preferably a Laptop.

Alright, that's more reasonable. It's the fear mongering I don't get.
Happened to me. I didn't want to update till I finished some games that aren't supported on Windows 10, but it auto-updated anyway because I forgot to reschedule. Of course I was in the middle of my first Gothic 2 play-through, and naturally the game wouldn't launch after updating. Though, I found out that was AVG's fault, and I had to brute-force manually delete it because the uninstaller wouldn't work on Windows 10. =\ All's well now, and I think Gothic 2 actually runs smoother than before.

It has nothing to do with legally questionable activities, its that MS and its partners have no business monitoring, tracking or sharing information on me or my family's activities online. It is the virtual equivalent of having a peeping tom sitting outside your window all day and night, watching every private detail of your life. Even if you never do anything illegal, would you really be okay with that?

Congratulations, you haven't had the displeasure of MS acting as your PCs nanny. Not everyone is so lucky (or maybe you just haven't noticed something missing, MS doesn't tell you when they do it). In my case, both pieces of software are not only obtained from legitimate sources (directly from the dev/publisher), but they also have years worth of trustworthy usage behind them. There was absolutely no reason for them to be removed, other than the fact that both can do things MS doesn't like, such as editing the registry. MS can't have that, we might do something like permanently disable their forced updates.

So you don't care what they are collecting on you, that's your business, but I and many others do, especially when the personal data of websites and services seem to get hacked on weekly basis. MS is not immune, no matter how much they may believe their (our) data is impregnable. The sheer volume of data Win 10 collects is more than enough to steal an identity at the very least, god forbid they use it for something more malicious.

JMich: Do ask if you want info on how to do that with Windows' own tools though, I think I should be able to dig up the relevant MDL thread.
Please share.

Stevedog13: I speaks volumes for the quality of a product when it must be forced on people like this. Maybe now people will quit laughing at me for still using Vista!

drealmer7: hahaha! VISTA! not a chance! (just having fun with you!)

I had the win10 thing there briefly but I removed it, somehow. Manual updates only, ever.
Strange, I always imagined you to be the Linux type, being a free anti-corporate non-conformist etc...

Of course they do, information is money and power.

Either my memory or my google-fu is failing me, since I can't find the thread I was thinking about in MDL. Quite a few comments mention this module though, which I think is the powershell script I was recalling.

For one (of the many) tutorial on how to use it, see here.

Man, I didn't know they were forcibly upgrading people. That kind of blows my mind, and I figured I had seen enough that that wasn't possible. I do have one Win7 machine that ignores my setting to only manually install updates and does them anyway. I don't think it's been getting targeted for any of the win10 update stuff, but would be pretty pissed if it just up and upgraded all by itself. Would probably die trying seen has how the OS drive is almost maxed out.

There is a mysterious 20GB of data on my HD I'm not sure where it's hiding at the moment. And my internet has been slowing to a crawl without explanation for a few days now. Maybe I'm getting a surprise.

I have 10 on my laptop which stopped being able to go to sleep after the last update . It just kills everything and turns off when it should be sleeping, apparently ignoring my power settings. Seep still actually works, but only if I manually do it. It's slowed everything down, and constantly nags me about closing things to save RAM when I have 2GB going unused, and has some great need to get me to try Office365. Not interested in having more of the Win10 experience in my life right now.

Elmofongo: Well I have done it and the Windows 10 Icon is gone.

Remember I had it since this whole thing began last year so I have not be subject to those pop up screens.

But I am not gonna update my PC at all.

I have not for long time now and so far nothing bad happened to my PC.

And I have been told that nothing bad really happens if you don't update. So long as you just keep to the safe parts of the internet.

Gilozard: The problem is that due to ad networks and Javascript, there aren't really any safe parts of the Internet any more. It used to be that avoiding malware was a matter of avoiding sketchy sites. But with the current ad networks, any ad can be a Flash ad or have Javascript that loads malicious payloads even on perfectly respectable sites.

UBlock for ads + NoScript can do a lot...but take work to finetune so all comments are blocked, for example.

Updating is definitely better than not updating. Run this script on your PC to remove the W10 upgrade stuff and then apply the Windows updates: https://voat.co/v/technology/comments/853510
The sketchy parts of the internet are now the most dangerous part of the internet. Steer clear of Christian religious sites and keep to the porn and you're much less likely to get infected.

Even useless information that has to be filtered from chaff, dander, dust, lint, and mert?
Everyone welcome Microsoft's biggest and newest project ever: GFWL v2.0, built right into the OS.

That's the best kind! The more data that is available, the better their predictive algorithms are at serving up content and advertising to us. Have you not heard the story of how Target figured out a teenage girl was pregnant before her own father knew, just by data mining her shopping habits? Win 10 provides MS with way more data than Target had available when they did that, I can't even imagine what they (and whoever they sell the data to) could do with all that info.

cogadh: I was very happy with Win 10 until an update removed some software from my system without asking or warning me that it was happening. Apparently, MS considers Spybot S&D and CCleaner to be "risky" pieces of software and to protect me from using them inappropriately, it just uninstalled them. Not cool.
I still have them both and I have auto updates turned on for my Windows 10. Are you sure it's because of Windows 10 updates?

And it's not on one machine also. I have fifty machines here with exact same software configurations albeit slightly installed supporting software (for instance, I have Steam on my laptop I'm using to type this message, while others don't have).
