I can't believe people still talk about this game. It was just a victim of hype. If it didn't have Sony marketing behind it, or wasn't shown in a E3 press conference, it would have just come and gone, enjoyed by a few and ignored by most, just like Joe Danger.

The only thing people like more than to put something up on a pedestal is to tear it down afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, Hello Games bears much of the blame, I'm just saying it takes two to tango.

People tend to get upset when they don't get what they paid for.

As for the rest of us, it's a fun fiasco to laugh about.

I wonder if there are other examples in gaming like this? Gamers being promised the moon and then the finished product not living up to the hype...

Arkham Knight.
One overhyped thing being used to make fun of another overhyped thing.

Got any parody videos for Arkham Knight like the one you posted about NMS? I nearly cried laughing at that one...

Just off the top of the head, Daikatana is legendary example.
Also, most of later projects of Peter Molyneux

"Does Peter Molyneux have kids? That's a frightening thought. You can bet he really talked them up before coming out of the womb. 'This one's basically gonna be the greatest child in the world. The innovation going in this child, you just can't believe it! This child—get this—this child will eat things, and the matter it eats will be converted into matter that processes the body! It's never been seen before!'"

Hey Simpsons used to be good! Even if that was 20 years ago!

This NMS hype deal is truly well nourished because of the internet, I say. Marks also the demise of these type of game launches and all.
But you'll never be as frustated as that 17yr old me so damn interested about a game previewed on a mag called *drum roll* ....

...... KABUKI WARRIORS!

I mean:

1) Xbox: a new high-tech thingy, state of the art console. Whoa!
2) Fighting game mixed with kabuki theater? Man what could go wrong?
3) Made by respectable japanese devs who previously worked on some awesome games like Bushido Blade (Lightweight) and so many memorable ones.

And then, we got this. I remember playing this in 2001 and thinking "is this the reason we came so far?" ;P

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion comes to mind, especially with the promised earth shattering "radiant AI" mechanic. Ironically it seemed that by "radiant AI" they actually meant "NPCs have a set schedule that they repeat for infinity", which is something the Gothic series had done YEARS before. Of course Bethesda being Bethesda, they were never called out for it, not even for their obviously completely scripted promo vids showing their "radiant AI" doing things that were completely absent from the actual game.

I also seem to recall Skyrim being hyped up in one way by them making the claim that you could affect the in-game economy by doing things like burning down lumber mills to hurt a villages prosperity etc etc. Oh, and them giving generally the same promises regarding "radiant AI" as they did for Oblivion and again not delivering the goods. And that snowstorms could actually lead to snow building up and blocking entrances to caves, etc. And that pretty much nothing was prescripted. And...well you get the idea. Again, Bethesda got away with it because...Bethesda. At least THAT is finally changing.

My deepest condolences...
You just remind me of another feisty one - Rise of the Robots.
audience - Adaptive AI? Soundtrack by Brian May? Are you kidding us?!
publisher - Yes, we do.

My deepest personal disappointment was probably Master of Orion 3, but that hype was - if I remember right - slightly smaller.
