It's the adaptation of the first Yakuza game. Named Ryu ga Gotoku in Japan.

Trying to summarize: the game had a by the numbers revenge/clear my name type of plot, perfect for a simple, chessy and fun B movie.
The movie starts in medias res, but never bothers to go back and tell us how we got there, who anyone is, how any of the characters met, what's their relation to each other, or what their motivations are. Instead of using all it has available to try and rectify that, it wastes half of its 90min runtime on bafflingly useless subplots that never go anywhere, or relate to the main plot at any point. The main character is the only one driving the plot forward, and he honestly disappears for 30min, that's a third of the movie, while we watch everyone else just twiddle their thumbs. Miike didn't seem to understand the difference between showing elements from the game, and adapating the spirit of the game. Hopefully he has improved in subsequent adaptations.
