TheDudeLebowski: GOG was spared because the goal was to crack the DRM and make a statement. However, 2 days ago, Illegal copies of GOG games have started popping up everywhere (when the announcement was made).
GameN16bit: Source?
That's a trap, if I ever saw one.
But you can write it off as the same with your claim that this move GOG is making will increase GOG's exposure and bring more titles in.
I'm assuming Skyrim isn't here yet because GOG's market share and sales are not big enough and not because it's a cash cow under DRM usage? Nevermind that Bethesda has released a bunch of other titles on GOG, DRM-free.
Increased sales may be attributed to Galaxy and Cyberpunk 2077, yet they also may be attributed to a substantial increase in GOG's game roster, or a gradual trust of consumers in their FCKDRM beliefs, or to extensive YouTube support, or to the occasional freebies, or to the giveaway and trading threads in the forum, or due to the forum overall, or all of the above, or even none of the above.
Bottom line is, you don't know, I don't know, and the marketing department doesn't know. We can all guess.
However, if said move betrays GOG's supporters due to failing to uphold the "cause", even if it's
simply by casually enabling DRM support, what happens when GOG's old supporters leave?
In any case, writing all this has made me realize that this is so left-field, it might as well be a prank from GOG's marketing department or simply 2020 being 2020.
"Ah, fck it," as The Dude would say.
