Breja: Honestly, all the news from Blizzcon sound like that joke from Onion "we're running out of past to strip-mine". Remaster of Diablo 2, rehash of Burning Crusade, repackaged old "arcade" games and even the trailer for the new WoW mini expansion looks like they're rehashing Arthas.
avatar
Matewis: Not that I would've supported them in any case, but it irks me to no end that they still haven't included The Lost Vikings 2.
I assume there might be some issues because Blizzard weren't actually the devs for that one. Otherwise I've no idea why they wouldn't include it.

avatar
Matewis: But yes, I think they are now officially out of things to remaster (I don't think Warcraft 1 & 2 or anything in the arcade collection counts - though a Lost Vikings remaster might be pretty sweet).
Hearthstone Classic? Maybe they'll remaster all the old cinematics and release them on blu-ray :P

avatar
Matewis: And that WoW trailer reminds me of Terminator Dark Fate...
Did that also have a Giant Nipple Evil Chain Guy?

Ah right yes that's probably it. It certainly was very good from what I can recall.

xP - Sylvanas wrecking the Lich King's helmet somehow reminds me of how Connor was snuffed out in that film. Shitting on the past and what made the lore what it is in the first place sort of thing.

Ah, you meant that cinematic trailer. I was talking about the new one where the Blond Paladin Guy becomes a Totally Not Arthas White Hair Evil Death Knight.

Something tells me all blonde paladins in Azeroth will start dyeing their hair from now on :)

Elmofongo: What WOW trailer?
This one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4gBChg6AII

I'm a bit behind the times apparently - that's from 2019 :P

Cadaver747: StarCraft.exe file from folders x86 and x86_64 initiates Battle.net launcher for me with an option to Play. No way for me to run it without the internet.

I've bought original Starcraft (legacy) on Battle.net some years ago and as far as I know it's the very same version they currently offer for free.
avatar
timppu: Odd. Appears to me that has changed then, since the version I downloaded. The game goes straight to StarCraft, if I launch StarCraft.exe. The Launcher.exe doesn't, it seems to connect to the internets and stuff.

Have you tried to run it on a system where there is no Battle.net client installed? If you just copy the game files to another PC and there launch StarCraft.exe?

EDIT. It does seem the installation is different, as I don't have such "x86" and "x86_64" subdirectories at all, below the main StarCraft installation directory. Both the StarCraft.exe and StarCraft_Launcher.exe are there in the same directory. Oh well, good thing I backed it up then...
The current free version of StarCraft available on their client is just the Remastered one without the ability to enable the HD graphics and cutscenes, just like WarCraft III: Reforged. I belive the "legacy" installers are just the same as the "legacy" installers of WarCraft III.

For Diablo II, they have stated that the classic and remastered are separate games, that they learnt from the W3R mistake and are not going to force update the legacy version to the new one, even if Diablo II: Resurrected is build upon the old version.
From the about an-hour-long panel discussion of the remaster:
"Now, we do still allow you to play offline, right? You will need to authenticate that your copy is legit, but after that you won't be bothered."

Now that would be acceptable if that really was just an actual one-time check, like during the purchase or when downloading the installation package from B.net, but Blizzard being Blizzard they VERY likely meant that you will be required to connect to B.net and authenticate the legitimacy of your copy EVERY time you start up the game.

This is the problem with tying games to an account.

My game version is 1.23.8.9341 (latest), I know for a fact that original 16-bit colored version could run without Battle.net client and internet connection. I have no idea if it was the case with the updated Remastered version, but it doesn't work for me at the moment.

I can't do it at the moment and if you check the attached screens you'll see that it probably would not change anything. I've relocated StarCraft.exe file and noticed that it was hardcoded to link to the client dll and launcher executable.

As an extra I included my game folder arrangement. Oddly enough is that when I first tried to change Battle.net launcher to >Exit the Battle.net App completely< On game launch the game was not working, but it works just fine now.

Shanuca: Thank god they won't make us stay online to play this remaster. Apparently, it needs to be online one time for activation and that's it.
avatar
rjbuffchix: Still one time too many if you ask me.

I'll wait for it to come here DRM-free. If not, I don't want it.

This would be one of the games I'm willing to break my boycott for, too, but that's another topic.
Agreed. But at least isn't Diablo 3's always online BS, which is going to kill the whole game when Blizzard decides to pull the plug.

Fortunately Console players can play Diablo 3 offline

Ok so you are talking about the Remastered version with high res graphics? I was talking about the "original" version that they offered for free for some time.

From what I recall the only difference between the two is whether you can toggle new assets or not. "Original" free Starcraft still has all the new assets in the files, just like Warcraft 3 does after Reforged update.
I think I'll stick with my discs for Diablo II and Starcraft. At least while I still have an optical drive that works.

If this version comes to GOG, really DRM-free, I may take it into consideration one day. For now, I'm not expecting much from Blizzard.
