darthspudius: Doesn't mean the episodes were bad. They had their fair share of great episodes.

budejovice: I loved the Voyager pilot so much that I basically forgave any future sins...

And perhaps I should add that I mean first episode, not Tom Paris. :)
Sure ;)

chadjenofsky: This new Star Trek series will be boldly going where I won't: streaming web subscriptions. I pay for TV already. I'm not about to pay more for shows that decide to air independently while still broadcasting their other crap on TV. BOOOO!!!

And to add insult to injury, they're going to broadcast just the first episode on regular TV. This new series should be renamed Star Crack!
Streaming subscription? Above and beyond what people pay for cable/dish? No thanks. If it were on TV, I may watch it, but I am not going to pay additional to watch a tv show.

TARFU: So if millions of people watch something, it's automatically good?
I might have replied to the wrong message with that. Someone posted (can't find it now) that the new series will likely fail because old Star Trek fans don't like what's been done in the movies. I only tried to point out that it looks like a lot of people do like the movies and therefore not only could a series in the style of the movies have success, but it's entirely possible that the dislike for the movies is a minority opinion, of "hardcore trekkers".

Breja: No. Better writing, better direction, music, acting, style, original ideas.
Early TNG (first few seasons, although the first was the worst) was terrible in terms of writing, direction and original ideas. Ham fisted scripts of no interest, with annoying characters and a camera that spent hours switching from face to face as they stood impassively (okay, I may be exaggerating just a bit). B5 was much better (even if a little over-acted at times).

I'm not saying every single one of those applies to every old show, much less it's every season. TNG had a rocky start (I still like it, there is good stuff there, despite all the problems) but it improved by leaps and bounds and as a whole is a great show.

Sidenote- Shatner made a documentary about the early problems of TNG. Quite an interesting little thing, at least for the fans.
Awesome news! It was about time already! I hope they don't ruin in though :)

Thanks a lot. I'm too cheap to buy that, but I've read and watched enough (in particular this detailed review), and it's quite interesting and illuminating. It certainly explains why the series was so bad initially.

Dat pilot tho.

"Great joy... and gratitude."

I've learned to appreciate the good parts of the early years of TNG. I still think Doctor Pulaski was more fun than that wet blanket Crusher.

Even the first season has really good episodes and ideas (despite the cheesy funeral I really like Skin of Evil), and starting with season two we're getting some truly great episodes like Measure of a Man, Time Squared and Q Who.

And I agree, I also like Pulaski more than Crusher. It's a pity she never showed up again, possibly in DS9 or Voyager.
Am I the only one Star Trek fan who actually enjoyed the new movies. Though not really treky but still entertaining imho.

must be! I despised the 1st one so much (it's what made me realize that Abrams is The Ruiner) I never even bothered with the 2nd, and will not watch any future movies either.

I've mentioned it before here many times- I really like the first one, and even the second one has a lot of good things about it and is entertaining. The hate they're getting is rather silly and somewhat annoying seeing how much praise muche worse movies get, but one has to learn to ignore it or go insane.

PimPamPet: Sign of the times? And like others have mentioned, there's plenty of reasons to be skeptical. The last two shows (Voyager and Enterprise) frankly sucked bananas and the new movies, while passable popcorn flicks, don't really "feel" like the Trek of old (and yes, of course nostalgia plays a part in it as well). The audience has grown up, but the franchise was dumbed down. Expectations are accordingly low.

Breja: Bah, humbug. Voyager wasn't bad, and neither was Enterprise. Like I said above, I like all things Trek, and I think all this hate towards the later shows and movies is largely nonsensical. Nothing Star Trek was ever so bad as to taint the franchise and justify all this negativity. I love Star Trek, I'll be the first to yell "betrayal" if it's justified. For now however there is no reason not to greet the news with optimism.
I have a big diatribe somewhere on these forums in a Voyager thread about what made Voyager different and why fans don't like it. Don't even remember all of what I said. or thought. but hey the proof is on here somewhere.

I liked Voyager.

but if I'm being completely honest, I liked Seven's ass most of all the Voyager shit.

I still lament the way that they ended it though. it sucked. they never had any klingons on that show. then they had that Klingon ghost ship. that's what they should have used to take the show out. those Klingons, would tie in to the end of the series. they would play some pivotal role in this domino effect of circumstances involving the borg, the caretaker, transwarp hubs, martok, the enterprise, and in the end the lost Klingons would do something to open up a permanent method of travel to the delta quadrant. this would solve all loose ends with regards to Voyager and its crew, and give Voyager and its crew a healthy place in future Star Wars lore.
It will fail. CBS priorities are all F**ked up. Only the desperate will watch it. Since Gene's passing away. Every startrek since has flopped. Because no publisher or producer see his universe. They're doing there own version and that's not Startrek. Its for $$$ nothing else.
