Stig79: They got bashed for that rotten SoD first, yes. I guess people didn't enjoy a gigantic plot-hole being shoved in between BG1 and 2. And when they voiced a negative opinion about it, they got labeled Gamergaters and transphobes and the like. Even trans gamers got labeled that.
So they got bashed for that, and then for the bundling, and then when they got caught lying (for over a year) about who did the bundling. So...they are being bashed for three reasons, really.
Yes they have been removed from the store. You can't buy them separately now. And the extras have been removed from the classics, so Beamdog can sell that stuff separately. If you already had the classic it is no issue. The soundtrack is included there. But if you never had it, you aren't getting it with the EE download code for the classics.
Which means you have to pay 3-4 times more for the classics with the extras now.
The bashing started long before SoD too, right at the release of BG1:EE.
When it was first released, there was major uproar about:
- the fact that they were charging $20 for the $10 original + free mods (which isn't true, you can't fully achieve all of the improvements of the EE with mods, but, I digress).
- the fact they broke compatibility with existing mods
- the additional content
- the new bugs
I won't defend Beamdog / Overhaul. They've done some stupid things, and they've earned much of the hatred they receive. Their games are overpriced for what they are.
I know I'm in the minority around here, but I really like the EE versions. I'd rather play the EE versions than the originals. If I calculate the enjoyed-hour per dollar on the EE games, they still come out well ahead of lots of other games I've purchased.
We have different definitions of "removed". They haven't been removed from the store. You can still buy everything you could before, it will just cost you more. Descent 1 & 2 are removed from the store. You can't buy them at all.
