The ScummVM Team is proud to announce that Myst and Myst: Masterpiece Edition are now playable in ScummVM using the latest daily builds, and are ready for testing.

Hallelujah! Just as I'm looking at Android tablets to order.
They're doing well, first the RPG support announcement, then ten new games, now even Myst.

I agree. I just meant the recent spurt of activity. Residual could use some of that man power.

It's really great to see them expanding their library further and further. The speed they've been adding support for new engines is pretty impressive.

I wonder if GOG should switch to ScummVM for Masterpiece Edition now.

Well, whatever they chose in the end I’m sure they will at least wait for a stable build of ScummVM including Mohawk support (Myst’s engine).
That's great! Now if they could only add Gabriel Kinght 1 and 2 to the package as well...
I'm sure I've asked this before, but what are the main benefits of running games in ScummVM instead of, say, DOSBox? Is it the portability, ie. running on Android tablets?

I kinda like DOSBox because there you don't have to wait or check whether a game is supported by it. All DOS games just work in DOSBox.

Unless I'm mistaken, there was no DOS version of Myst. Sure you can install Windows 9x is DOSBox and then install Myst in that but ScummVM is much simpler in this case. The Curse of Monkey Island is another example that comes to mind.

Edit: Actually Myst was released earlier than I thought. Windows 3.11 should do the trick and that is a lot easier to install in DOSBox than 95 or 98. So it's up to your preference, I guess. I personally have a DOSBox app for iOS but ScummVM is still stuck in jailbreak land so that's one reason I favour DOSBox, myself, whenever possible.

Edit 2: There are also a few games I bought that don't include the executables so I have no choice in the matter. The version of Maniac Mansion included on the Day of the Tentacle CD, for example.

DOSBox is similar to a virtual machine, ScummVM is an interpreter. One runs the executable, the other parses the code.
Think of ScummVM as a very faithful to the original source port. It may offer some advantages (bug fixes, support for voice + subtitles), different resolutions, but it is not running the original executable, so cheats (for example) may not work. DOSBox on the other hand will run the original executable, bugs and everything.

Another important difference is that ScummVM is much less resource-hungry, not having to emulate a full OS. On low-end machines it can take a game from barely playable (with DOSBox) to really enjoyable (with ScummVM).
Interesting announcement... ScummVM has partially supported the Myst games since 2010, due to them using Broderbund's widely popular Mohawk Engine. I was playing Riven on an Android tablet about 2 years ago and it worked beautifully, even better than playing it natively!

I presume they're writing a special interpreter just for Myst now.
