dewtech: DaggerXL is one engine remake, but it's a WIP
avatar
rtcvb32: I've known about DaggerXL for a while, but since it doesn't seem to be ready...

I also remember getting Arena and Daggerfall working in DosBox, but that was a long time ago... Including Albion and Daggerfall and, well that brings back the pre-2001 dates...
Forgot to add this: http://www.dfworkshop.net/category/daggerfall-unity/
Why "regrettably"? Morrowind is a masterpiece and has in it even features that were removed in later titles. No shame in that being better than later games. Hell, don't you even know that "they don't make them like they used to"? This is THE, motto, of pc gaming! The rule!

I think likely it means that later titles seem so weak in comparison that the best game bethesda put out is nearly 15 years old and long since dropped support/resources for.

I did a similar thing in Oblivion, wedged something between the cast-key, and pointed a "open very easy lock"-spell on a door, then I went and made coffee :P

And of course picking up all the moon sugar and skooma in the cave in the beginning of MW and selling it to Ra'Virr for a massive amount of gold!
Now that I finally have a machine capable of playing Oblivion without all the settings turned waaaaaaaay down I really need to give it another go.
Since my first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion, I kind of have a bias towards that and some difficulty getting into Morrowind.

At the time of Morrowind's release, I was most likely too busy playing Baldur's Gate, Diablo II, Red Alert 2, and Quake III.

I liked Skyrim (I still haven't "played it" as I'm only about 200 hours in-game so far - haven't played the main story yet), I loved Oblivion but oh boy, how can I forget the first time I saw the stars in Morrowind.

And then that feeling of "what do you mean I can choose to do what I want and go where I want"? Plus, it has a very interesting world with the feeling of alienation being very common among players, in comparison to Oblivion (typical medieval stuff) and Skyrim (typical nordic setting).

Not sure if it is the best TES game, since I like them all for different reasons, but without any doubt, everyone should play it at least to see the island.
used to /want to play oblivion but after reading all the reviews years ago, and the fact that my AGP videocard wasn't good enough for it, i don't really care.
Morrowind is an absolute terror if you're the type of player who likes to loot/steal everything that isn't nailed down, just because there's so much lying around in boxes and stuff you can loot and sell. Because you can only carry so much before becoming encumbered, you end up doing rounds back-and-forth to the merchant, and then when the merchant is out of gold to pay you you need to find another merchant to sell all this crap to.

rtcvb32: Probably doesn't help that in Oblivion ... took away awesome spells like fly/jump (For some reason??).

The biggest problem i can think Morrowind has is the game world doesn't feel alive. People stand in place or walk to a nearby spot without actually seeming to do anything. Second would be the graphics,
Or take away levitate spell - clear signal I personally take as linearity over freedom: once in a dungeon, proceed in good, linear order... and those high nooks n crannies, or mountain tops, out of bounds, of course!

But interesting view about the gameworld, though, rtcvb!

I am so impartial to lore that despite NPC AI limitations, I cannot get deeply into Oblivion and Skyrim because the game-world (IMO) lacks the spark of Morrowind. So I sort of think the opposite. :-)

By this I mean that the richness and interest in which the way political and religious forces were written into Morrowind gameplay, with deeply tentacled, manipulative even, Great Houses and Guilds stirring the pot. And then there is the topic of slavery (Twin Lamps story line).

In Skyrim, races are purely cosmetic - in Morrowind the racial and faction reactions make deep sense in story telling, and impact gameplay. Or at one point in the game to be persecuted as a heretic by official religion - fantastic!

For example, choosing to play Argonian or Khjaiit - slave races in the game, with low start disposition from those in power -cuts your challenge much harder at the start phases.

In Skyrim it's pretty much: faction 1 (imperium) vs faction 2 (natives) - and occasionally a dragon swoops down. And instead of deeply influential, widely present factions you will get a bandit bounty from a local lord.

Okei, I simplify - but I miss Morrowind writing and complexity. Yuup, obviously I do. :-p

Haha, I completely got lost trying to get and sell everything.
Everywhere I walked there were some hidden caves with stuff in it and I had to loot like a maniac since it was my modus operandi in RPGs back then.
Next time, I'll try to ignore as much as possible and see something of the story.

dewtech: Morrowind is too streamlined. Daggerfall was a bit better, but I suppose as Morrowind was your first beth game, mine was Daggerfall. Nostalgia goggles.
I smile at yer post because you must have a "dagger" to pick with Morrowind to make such a put down!

Yes, Morrowind was my first Bethesda- but from thence it has remained in my list of titles to be replayed every couple of years, so the nostalgia remains very current affair.

The fighting is obviously not tactical in the BioWare party based sense. Yet to me, because of the enchanting, spellmaking and alchemy - in any harder fight absolute necessity for survival - and the great level up system, I never bore this far. I tend to rather die ever so often on "hard" setting.

As final point, I do think any gameplay enjoyed is the best and right kind of gameplay. So those whom love Ultima are fine, but also so are those whom would find Skyrim the best of Beth. And my Morrowind-love is certainly true indeed.

As we Finns, freely put, say: "Someone fancies the father, someone else would fancy the son." (Yksi tykkää äidistä, toinen tyttärestä)
I've played the Elder Scrolls series since Arena. It was a time when I hacked the .EXE so I could copy the contents of the disc to my hard drive only because the CD-ROM access lag was HORRIBLE.

After getting out of the dungeon, the game blew my mind. Never before had I played a game with a large "open world". I eagerly awaited Daggerfall which didn't disappoint, I liked the horse and cart idea (wish it carried through to Morrowind), but the dungeons and crypts were too formulaic and easy to grab and run and then lather, rinse, repeat.

Morrowind was quite the change. While the same type of open world game play, nothing as limited as its predecessors and they did this game justice.

However, I have read reviews that there are other games (including an isometric view game) touting they are similar to Morrowind. Perhaps I should check those out as well.

However, the Elder Scrolls (except for Elder Scrolls Online) series is OK in my book.
If only they have a mod for Morrowind with isometric view.
It would be pretty nice. Like a whole new game.
