Isn't Tim Swiney's Exclusivity Boutique launcher (the other platform's client too, for that matter) mandatory for getting updates, patches and fixes for the game in question?
If that's the case then only the initial unpatched release version can be considered DRM-free, can't it?

that is an eternal question which have not, and cannot, be answered - beacuse it depends completely on how you define what DRM is.

Take it on a case-by-case situation.

Gonna have to check PC Gaming Wiki for those particular games and ALSO check for yourself, if you "own" the game already there.

Namely to see if the "-EpicPortal" work-around works (to bypass the store), if the DLC works outside of the store; sometimes it does, sometimes it don't. go see The Outer Worlds is one where the base-game works outside the store, but the DLC's do NOT work outside of the store/launcher...yet Control it all does work outside of the store-launcher.

I would also back-up the game-folder elsewhere (onto another HDD/SSD/etc not tied to your PC) and not run Epic Game Store at all, if you don't need to.

You'd be better off using Heroic Launcher if part the game of or all of the game's DRM-FREE...just to namely get around any sort of Epic shenanigans (updating problems, avoiding updates, DLC might require client, etc etc). Namely, in Heroic - there's an option to "Automatically Update Games" so just make sure it's unchecked so it'll never updates anything unless you tell it to do so. Namely, I've done this for Fallout 3 GOTY (Epic Store Version) via Heroic, since I used down-graders to the previous version (so FOSE Mods can actually work).

Heroic Launcher's over here -> https://heroicgameslauncher.com/

If you got the game actually installed - provided, game doesn't care where you stick it and that it's installed in a certain places and/or if it needs to actually be in the Registry (if it even cares about the registry) - well, you might also want to stick your game (unprotected versions without DRM) in a game-folder Epic Launcher does NOT recognize either (i.e. it only knows where you originally install it). I do this a lot for Steam, Epic, and other games...that I don't want those stores to update, provided that the old version lacks DRM; example: I've basically done this for Steam w/ System Shock 1 Enhanced and System Shock 2, for example - works fine not where Steam wants it, without DRM.

Also, often use "-EpicPortal" in Target line for any games not really entirely forcing the Epic Store too, to get around some nonsense - provided this actually will work (not always). In some games, Shenmue 3, you can do that (EpicPortal trick) - but the game will be forever stuck w/ a black screen until you exit the game (force a close-out)...so that don't work either. Flat-out better off w/ GOG version for Shenmue 3. In other games like Control, the entire game and its DLC's works fine if you use "EpicPortal" trick when you're not using the launcher.

I don't use Tim's boutique, but I assume you get the update the same way as you get the game there - i.e. through the client after logging in.

If we compare that to gog, we don't need the client but we still need to log in on the page and download patches or new builds if we so desire. So the client is not required, which is awesome, however both platforms offer you the initial unpatched release version and if you want updates, patches, fixes as time goes by ... or sometimes downgrades and regressions, whatever the publishers want to serve us, and then you have to download them again yourself. I see no reason why you would call one of these specific cases being more drm-free than the other. Just because of client vs web browser requirement? Unless it was a rhetorical question all along.

The very same.
I'm a subscriber to the client/launcher=DRM variant of the definition, so it was a bit of both (rhetorical as well as legitimate) I guess.

Alrighty then, that's like a razorsharp line for me as I use a downloader and/or galaxy on gog to download stuff (I don't really find browsers all that great with huge batches of downloads, reliability-wise). As long as the client is not needed to actually launch the game, it's essentially the same to me (the less bloated the client/downloader, the better for me). But I understand that one could say that web browser tends to come with your os preinstalled, so yeah... it's less of an extra dependency that way. Anyway, we are already treading a territory of semantics here, depending on how loosely each of us defines the term "drm-free" and I feel that topic was already chewed through countless of times by now.

I definitely think that what this conversation, along with many others here, shows is that DRM-Free is far from an objective definition and it just varies for each person.

Sarang: You can track when Sega largely fell and its largely when Sammy bought them out. The last game made before this was "Dodoro". Sammy's advice to Sega after they bought them out was to focus on the arcade market which was dying off at the time massively.
Sega can come back but they need to rehire Suzuki, Naka and Mizuguchi. It is a bad take when almost all the old guard at many of these Japanese companoes have been let go or wanted to leave, including Sakaguchi and Kojima-san. I don't CARE about it being a cultural thing that if someone screws up once big time you don't fire them you just place them somewhere that is so unimportant and awful you passively bully someone into leaving. Nonsense like this is why "Final Fantasy" isn't as good as it use to be with Final Fantasy X and before. This is why many people haven't been happy with what Square has made until Octopath Traveller. I won't call them the merged name because Square has largely been in charge because nothing I see outside of DQ and SO resembles an Enix game in any way and now it seems Tri-Ace is facing bankruptcy.
On the opposite side Sony gutted their Japanese division which had my favorite game series "Gravity Rush". Innovative gameplay? Check. Good artstyle? Check. Interesting story? Check. Before this it was "Folklore" and trailing after this was likely "Cursed Mountain" and "Madworld". I like for this stuff to challenge me and after Sega was gone essentially nothing did this. Oh sure I'll like a game but won't LOVE it...Sega had "Segagaga", Panzer Dragoon, Illbleed, Clockwork Knight, Nights, JSR, Skies, etc. Sure some Indie games do Arthouse like Sega but they won't have the budget to truly make it complete. Since Sony's Japanese division is gone I have 0 faith that there will be even ONE game I love in the PS5/Series X gen.
Yeah I'd take those people being hired back at Sega and pushing their arcade division because arcades will come back. The live service crap is going to start bombing more and soon arcades will come back. You want a more steady stream of income sell arcade machines or get into leasing them. Frankly this is what should be done with Tekken, DOA and SoulCalibur. I am honestly worn out that Namco thinks we should shoulder the entire cost of development of new characters in pack after pack, never getting a complete edition of the game for consoles. I also think other fighting gamers are as well...it doesn't matter that home consoles CAN do them perfectly well, it matters that the arcade was largely subsidizing the dev. cost and most gamers can't or won't pay for arcade quality joysticks. Sega doesn't even have to just focus on VF as there are plenty of racers and gun games they made for the arcade as well as other genres that fit the models that D&B and others largely have.
edit: The arcade division back is a start for Sega then they can come back on the console front with enough money. Bringing back sports before this with a full game would be huge too as long as it had good gameplay...this gambling so you can play a full team with beloved players in main or fantasy is ridiculous.
Seriously though the arcade division is a sitting duck with the "quality" of what Cheap Thrills puts out. Compare their new Cruisin' which nickels and dimes you with fewer tracks and non-Outrun style(pure timer) compared to before and they didn't really change much. That's likely their best game even. The games are largely not fun in my opinion regardless of how bad most of their games look and they just rely on IP licensed games. -_-

Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Damn, super informative and a thing I do see with Japanese companies and a big reason why some of my favorites are dying.

I didnt know about Sega but yeah, they just havent been the same. Arcades arnt dead in Japan but COVID did a big number on them with big arcades in Akihabara closing up so I wonder how Sega is dealing since they were hurting.

Also completely agree that Square lost its touch after Spirits Within was a major flop and Sakaguchi took responsibility and stepped down aka left the company. Spirits Within was a boring movie but had a huge impact on CGI and the gaming industry in showing what can be done. The film was made in 2001 and still looks great. Sakaguchi was the lifeblood of Final Fantasy and the series has lost its way, going for a more action-focused route with the idea that people dont like RPGs anymore. Doesnt help that the new CEO isnt a creative like Sakaguchi but a finance guy.

Gravity Rush was great but didnt really like it on the big screen. Was fun on vita but 2 on the big screen gave me motion sickness (although that could be age). Japan Studio did do great stuff and I dont think Team Asobi has been doing as good a job although it is still early for them. I dont like the path Sony is going down and do hope they course correct.
Apparently "Gravity Rush" is getting the movie treatment and if I see some fake woke bs treatment they will have earned my antipathy for the rest of my life. Do we know if the language in "Gravity Rush" is an actual full on created language or not?

Anyway other things I'd like to see changed in the Japanese game industry is talented writers to be seen like Mizuguchi, not just artists. It burns me Nomura-san has more respect than Kawano-san. I think the arcade will come back because people will end up more broke as a joke and arcades will be cheaper...at least they won't be able to afford DLC anymore.

Lastly like what I said about the old guard...would you fire or let go of people that are the video game equivalent of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Akira Kurosawa, Eisenstein, etc.? I sure wouldn't fire those people or put them in a corner, I would still have them work on major projects and have them mentor people too.
I find it pathetic that Miyamoto is the only one LEFT of all those at the old game companies...Naka, Suzuki, Kojima, etc. all are gone. Konami kicking Kojima-san out was one of the dumbest decisions they ever made especially considering how CHEAP MGSV was at the time compared to its contemporaries. I mean it cost $80 million when many games had and now do, cost over $100 million easy.

As for EnixSquare, that fool keeps investing in NFT's. I wonder if they're going to be the first to try being stupid to throw people in prison for downloading ROM's due to that nonsense, that they should pay some ridiculous price because the game is furthermore an NFT that NO ONE asked for.

Gravity Rush shouldnt be changed since it already hits alot of woke checkmarks imo. I would honestly prefer a Japanese director make the movie though since some manga to film adaptations in Japan have gone well but not so much for Hollywood. Regarding recent video game adaptions:
- Arcane - never played the game but its apparently focused on the backstory of popular characters and also retconed them a bit
- TLoU - probably the best argument but if any IP can transition to film/tv, its this one. It is basically a video game adaptation of the film The Road

Yeah, the language is fictional but inspired by French.

Im fine with the current approach. The focus should be on gameplay and while a good story is nice, I really dont think or like that it is slowly becoming more of the main selling point with more money being spent on it (see new Sony games). Sure the story for GoW is decent but it should come at the expense of almost every boss being a troll.

While it sucks that these amazing people left the major studios, I do think that in some ways its a blessing in disguise for us gamers (thinking positive). They are no longer restricted by the corporate BS of having to make money implementing a checklist of features (open world, kid, leveling system, battlepass, etc.). Since the cost of game development has gone down, these superstars are establishing their own studios and have been making bangers.

PlatinumGames was established by former Capcom superstars Mikami (first Resident Evil and Dino Crisis), Inaba (Okami, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand), and Kamiya (Devil May Cry) and is now basically the go-to studio for action. Sakaguchi founded Mistwalker and makes games, citing dissatisfaction with management as another reason for why he left along with the Spirits Within flop. Konami is the big loser from the Kojima fallout, their first game Death Stranding already a hit with a sequel. Konami was going through the transition to leave video games and focus on pachinko which I think Kojima would have hated anyway. The only shame is that MGSV didnt get its third act. Its still a great game but that ending would have been cool.

Hell, I do think its the indies and smaller studios making waves and good games now while the major studios really arnt doing much. Kind of a testament to Nintendo for still making bangers, probably because their greats are still at the company.
Personally, out of the available games so far, I'm only really interested in Sackboy: A Big Adventure and I already own Horizon Zero Dawn. Nevertheless it's interesting that Sony is interested in releasing their games outside their consoles. Unfortunately, GOG historically has trouble getting the big titles. GOG users are lucky if they even get them years after release.

If the language of Gravity Rush is full the movie should be entirely subtitled and spoken in that language. I didn't really see "Gravity Rush" as fake woke. I won't use the term woke because woke started as just giving people a fair shot regardless of race or sex and focusing on talent. The "woke" that Hollywood pushes is them co-opting it with virtue signaling nonsense, which in English means window dressing in diversity.
Let me clarify when I say story, I mean primarily ONLY the Japanese and Korean ones getting the respect and acknowledgement more. I mean that talent will always only flow primarily into the gaming and Anime industries as both will always be bigger than their live action movies. Conversely it will stay the reverse in the US unless obscene money is paid to someone with those established credentials. In the rare case they find that person with talent who creates some great original story for a Western game when they achieve enough success and visibility they'll go knocking on Hollywood's door or writing novels among other careers. You see for writers in the US video game writing is seen as slumming it and is greatly embarrassing, it's a stepping stone and no self respecting writer would be caught dead doing it as a career. Not saying I feel this way, just that US and most Western writers are thinking that.
Sure, I'd like more Sony games. Just that A: You're asking a Japanese centric company to do DRM free.
And B: Very simply, a lot of the games I want, don't exist in PC executable form unless there's a version of Gran Turismo IV I never saw.
Here it is: Days Gone is available on GOG now!

Awesome! Hope Sony keeps 'em coming!

I bought it already on Epic a while ago and thought the PC port was excellent and the game was great. Underrated, if you ask me.

Glad to see it here on GOG, of course!
