Timboli: By the way the Definitive versions of Mafia II and Mafia III have been added to our library for free as separate entries, no doubt only for those who own those games.
This kind of fees upgrades are not tracked by this list :)

They are not really free upgrades as such, more like free alternate or remastered versions. We retain our original versions.

They are only obtainable if you've already have the original copy, that's why I don't track these kinds. Outcast is another recent one that I can think of with a similar situation

Yep, fairly similar to your postings like the following, only we are talking a free bonus game not free DLC, so exactly one of those things that this thread is about to my mind.

I don't really want to start an alternate Free Games thread.

I don't really want to start an alternate Free Games thread.
Hiya, let me explain a little what I consider to be a free game.

1) For starters, the item must be easily obtainable when the promotion is announced (Example the current Dex give
away)

2) It has to be native to GOG site, but I did make a separate category for cross-site promotions but I don't regularly track/update those (For example those Amazon Prime giveaways)

3) I will consider free games as part of pre-order purchases. (Town of light is the latest, based on my list, which was given away when Martha is Dead pre-order period was open)

4) I will consider pre-order DLCs as those are easy to track, and most times, these pre-order DLCs revert to paid DLC once the pre-order period is over

5) I will also consider free games given away as part of a site requirement (Buy more than $5 worth of games to get a particular game free, as per Summer Sale 2018)

6) Permanently free games (e.g. Ultima IV) will be tracked as these are usually accompanied by announcement plus they are the main reason for the thread.

7) GOG Connect is the last category I'll consider, given that those are easily obtainable, assuming you had the game on Steam already.

The one category that will fit all these, but I didn't want to track are permanently Free DLCs. My rationale for those are simple, its hard to track when free DLCs come on, given the lack of announcements, plus there are so many, and not really worth tracking.

The examples you have cited are essentially pre-order DLCs. There were announcements made, people could still obtain those free pre-order DLCs at time of announcement.

For Mafia however, I must disagree that it is the same or fit in any of the categories. In order to even get the free upgrades, you must own Mafia 2 or 3 prior to announcement. After the debut of the definitive editions, the previous editions were delisted and you could no longer obtain them through the store. For anyone else who did not own Mafia 2 and 3 previously but wants the "free upgrade", it is not obtainable. Hence I would not put it on this list.

The situation was the same for a few upgrades. I've already mentioned Outcast. I believe Spellforce 3 was another recent one. Wasteland 2 and 3 I think had the same upgrades. And also Into the Breach, although the case can be made that for Wasteland and Into The Breach, they were really more like major version patches, rather than a brand new game.

If you disagree, feel free to start a new thread. It's a free world out there :)

Are you being democratic about this, as this is not a personal thread.
In other words, while you started it, you certainly don't rule it.
I am trying to be diplomatic here, but you keep talking about 'your' view.

I gave a few linked examples, did you check each one, especially the latter two, as I see a contradiction in what you are saying. I recall such others, but I felt I gave enough examples.

I don't think we want to go down that road, if just because it would be silly.

Hiya! This is the last time I'll engage you on this topic. Then I'm afraid we'll just have to agree to disagree.

The linked examples were previously pre-order DLCs. The latter two, one is still a preorder (Destroy all Humans) that gives u a free game (Clone Carnage) which fits under 3 in my above post. See here for the relevant news article The last one (Deadly Dozen Reloaded) was a promotion, where if you were to purchase it, you would get the Original deadly Dozen Free. See here for the relevant news article.

Unless you're telling me that Mafia 2 Director's Cut and Mafia 3 Director's cut can be obtained as of today, and thus given Mafia 2 and 3 definitive versions respectively, I'll be more than happy to add it to the lists. Unfortunately, that is sadly not the case.

It is the same reason why I did not add Enhanced Doom and Enhanced Doom II to the list. You can't buy Ultimate Doom and Doom II+Master Levels by themselves anymore. But yet for owners of Ultimate Doom and Doom II + Master Levels, they get the Enhanced versions free.

As for this being a personal thread or not, I shall choose not to respond.

Goodo, and I guess we will have to do that. :)

Well it depends on who these postings are for doesn't it.

Sure the majority may be coming here to see what the latest free game they can acquire is, while others will also be happy to be notified of something free that has just turned up in their library, that maybe they have missed or don't check often. I see no reason to not advise of any free games, even if some cannot get them. Personally I am not interested in games or DLCs that are free if you buy something, and don't come here for them at all. There are different types of free game scenarios, which is what I have been trying to illustrate.

----------------------------------------------

For the record though, when I backup my games to external hard drives, I do so in a structured manner to be most effective, especially when spread over more than one backup drive, allowing them to more easily fit.

One of the folders I use is called GoG Freebies, which contains all the games I have gotten for free from GOG.

Mafia, Mafia II: Director's Cut & Mafia III do not go in that folder, they go in the folders for games that I have paid for, whereas bonus Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition do go in the GoG Freebies folder, as do any other free games or versions, but not free DLCs, which just go into the same folder as the game they are for.

Demos or Prologues are also free, but they go into a folder called GoG Demos.

So really, it is all about perspective ... mine clearly, is different to yours.

----------------------------------------------

Further to that to be more fully illuminating, any game that relates to a game in either GoG Freebies or GoG Demos, goes into a folder called GoG Mate. That is where the original three Mafia games reside in a series folder called Mafia.

I divide things even further beyond those three game folders .... GoG Linux, GoG Classic, GoG Excess, GoG Movies and GoG Videos. And then the majority of GOG games, those that don't fit in those categories go into alphanumeric sub-folders. The GoG Classic folder contains games that were originally released prior to 2002, whereas GoG Excess is for those from 2017 and newer. Games are also stored in series folders, and governed by the year of the oldest game within. Every game has its logical place based on rules, and where there are set precedence.

The priority order is - GoG Movies, GoG Videos, GoG Linux, GoG Demos, GoG Freebies, GoG Mate, GoG Classic, GoG Excess, and then the main GoG folder with alphanumeric sub-folders.

----------------------------------------------

Anyway, I digress and we should get back on topic. :)

I see your point. My apologies. I was referring to the list I kept updated which I update on a regular basis, of which of you see the opening post was what I reffering to about being on my list.

No worries, and thanks, all is good. :)

And if I haven't previously said so, thanks for starting this thread, much appreciated.
