I'm using Steam, i'm not always agree with some there. (after all everyone have its oponions) but insulting the whole community because some people doen't have the same opinions / tastes like yours , is just wrong.

And i beg to differ the whole community here doesn't hate with passion Steam, just some , not the WHOLE community.

It doesn't justify and it doesn't mean we have to rent everything, especially when renting is used as front for taking away customer control over a product and giving it to private corporates (drm).

Yes because it's so outrageous to demand that we get an update for a game we've already purchased. I don't remember ever complaining about Witcher 3 prices. GTA V is banned in Australia? Got any source on that? Only recent game I'm aware of being banned here is Hotline Miami 2.

Yes, it's so banned in fact that I managed to just waltz in chat up the lady behind the counter.... Oh and I bought the game while I was at it.
edit: oh and Hatred is too, but not if you bought the game before release date.

^ This. GOG is a rental service just as much as Steam, Origin, etc. It's just that they give you more freedom on what you can do with the game you rent. They still work on the same principle though, that you in the end don't actually own the game.

No, only to people who don't understand or know the terms and conditions of Steam. I use the term "rent" rather loosely, because people who rent things have some rights and recourses. That doesn't actually apply to Steam "rentals".

Steam is somewhere below renting, because I'm being facetious when I call it a rental service. If you think there is a comparison, that just shows you don't know much what you are doing with your money.

Quite good. I recently played it through including some mods who improve the game a lot. The story is still really good, the tension too and the gaming controls sufficient on a PC. The only drawback might be the low resolution textures here and there but for someone like me who doesn't care much about graphical quality, it's still good.

Definitely a lot of fun to play and worth the money but you may see that it is not from recent years graphics wise.

So while I would not dare to compare it to Witcher 3 for example, it is still quite good.
But noone ever owned a game truly. How can you own it if it is inherently non-physical? You even never owned a game when you still could buy it on disc where you had a bit more freedom but the principle was the same.

Do all these distinctions really make sense?

First you say GOG is like Steam and Origin.
Then you say it is not like Steam and Origin.
Then you say it is all the same (same principle).

So what is it then in the end? A bird, a plane, a birdplane?

In the end everything is the same, except for the differences. :)

Setting aside the semantic arguments over "licensing" versus "owning", the simple difference between GOG and Steam is this: if Steam shuts down its servers tomorrow, the vast majority of games on Steam stop working; if GOG does the same, nothing happens. This is what makes Steam a "rental" service; virtually all of the control over the products they "sell" are in Steam's hands, not yours, and while the same may be true on paper at GOG (read the EULAs on GOG games), in practice, that is not the case. With or without GOG as a service/storefront, you still maintain control over where, when, and how you use the software you have purchased. You can't say that about Steam without being completely disingenuous or embarrassingly ignorant.
