Hi everyone!
First time posting here, so I hope this question isn't too dumb, but TL;DR version: I've been wondering if anyone could maybe recommend me some fun, single-player RPGs that would let the player be a knight or something close to/like it? Doesn't have to be a recent title or anything.

An unnecessarily long explanation:
I'm not really a gamer and I've only played a few RPGs to date, but it seems to me that while most of them let me pick a knight class or something equivalent to it in the beginning, later on that choice doesn't make any significant difference story-wise, or often even gameplay-wise. So I wonder, do you guys know any story-driven RPGs in which your character would really be a knight, rather than simply a „chosen one“ with a knight background? Doesn't matter how it's approached, whether it's serious or parodic, whether the game tries for a realistic depiction, or the knights are more of the fantasy variant, whether your character serves someone or they're some sort of a lord themselves, or maybe if you just play some wandering spirit roaming the countryside... I don't have anything super specific in mind, but playing a story-driven, dialogue heavy game, in which roleplaying some sort of a knight person would feel meaningful would be a dream. I'd really like to play an RPG where being/feeling like a knight would be an actual part of the experience, if that makes any sense. The game doesn't have to be crazy about it, but if the NPCs at least noticed that's what you were, I'd be delighted.

If you've played a game like that that you enjoyed, feel free to share. :) I know there are probably lots of them but as I said, I'm terribly ignorant when it comes to games, so even the most obvious titles will probably be new to me. :D
Anyways, thank you very much for reading. Happy New Year and have a good one!

Mount and Blade: Warband? You can be a knight in that, and you're doing knightly stuff like owning towns, slaughtering villagers, collecting the taxes, having feasts, competing in tourneys, going to war for your king etc.

I haven't played Kingdom Come Deliverance, and I see you don't start off a knight, but I think it might be worth taking a look at if you want an immersive RPG experience, and I think there's knightly stuff to aspire to (not sure about this).
The Wyvern Crown of Cormyr DLC for Neverwinter Nights is one of those RPGs where the class of your main character doesn't matter that much, IIRC, but there is quite a bit of content relating to knights in it, and I think your character will be knighted, at some point, too.
Some may or may not consider them RPGs, but the Mount and Blade games are as close as you'll get to a "knight simulator".

Kradney:
Kingdom Come is pretty much perfect for what you're looking for - I absolutely loved the game.

Disclaimer - it is a *slow burn* and really almost does feel like a life simulator at first - you suck and you really feel like a peasant boy cast out into the world by events out of your control. You'll steal, sneak and just try to get by. But as the game opens up, as you improve skills by using them and dive into fun quests and an amazing world you'll slowly feel yourself becoming that knight. If you aren't into games where you suck at the beginning (Gothic, Elex) this one might be frustrating.

But if that wonderful character evolution, linked to increasing responsibilities and integration into the plot is a draw for you you'll love this game. Tough but really fun combat system as well. By the time of my late game I went from being a thieving street urchin, to a man of nobility. While my character dressed fit to his station in town, my barded warsteed carried a full set of layered armor should I need it. It was just an awesome feeling (I know I'm a geek for even typing that last sentance ;) ).

Legends of Eisenwald is another really good one. Great story that moves from these distant, "big" events and eventually sucks your character into them. I really enjoyed the tactical combat - it seems simple but there's a nice amount of depth in there.

You *might* not like that your party "resets" almost every map - I enjoyed this aspect as it was an excellent excuse to try new party combinations and classes of followers I might have ignored otherwise.

And like wpegg mentions - Mount and Blade is a great choice as well. There's not as much story but there's a lot to be said for growing your group of followers from a ragtag band into an army while fighting alongside other A.I. bands in large battles.
Dragon Age

check the game out here

I didn't read "medieval knight" in the opening post, so I'm going to say:
Knights of the Old Republic I & II

Thank you! I know the Mount and Blade series is a classic but I've never played any of the games. It's probably time to remedy that, I'll try to get my hands on the one you suggested.
Also, Kingdom Come I played and while it's not exactly what I'd hoped it would be, it's a very nice game, I don't regret spending time on it at all.

Leroux: The Wyvern Crown of Cormyr DLC for Neverwinter Nights
Thanks for the tip, Leroux! I've heard of Neverwinter Nights before, but for some reason I always forget about that game. I never got around to actually buying it or even finding out what it's about. I'll have to check it out.

teceem: Knights of the Old Republic I & II
Hehe. Oh man, I love those games! Those two got me curious about RPGs in the first place, so many good memories. Thanks for the tip, teceem.

Ixamyakxim:
First I'd like to say, thank you so much for taking the time to write this post, Ixamyakxim. Much obliged, truly.

Regarding Kingdom Come, I played that one, I'm happy to hear you liked it, too. :) 100 % agreed, I loved the way you level up skills in that game, it feels very rewarding once you start getting good and unlocking the various perks and combat moves. Some of the sidequests were great, too, that Charlatan guy was amazing. Also, I thought I was the only one who liked the combat system, a lot of people take issue with it, but, personally, I had great fun with it. :D And that thing about changing outfits, oh man, I did that too. I really liked the clothing in that game in general, the multiple layers were fun.

That being said, it wasn't exactly the experience I was looking for. It was unique in its hyper-realistic approach and I enjoyed it for that immensely, but I still long for a game, that would make me feel like a noble knight running around the land... Honestly, this is kind of strange, but I think the game that came closest to that for me is this game called "Overlord". Granted, it's a children's game, you're playing a bad guy and I wouldn't even call it an RPG, but there's this thing, where everyone you meet sees the armor you wear and automatically assumes you're a knight or someone important. And I thought it's pretty funny that this game (that's basically a parody) can absolutely nail this and fire up my imagination, just imagining what goes on in that world.

I've never even heard of Legends of Eisenwald, but I'm definitely going to check that out, sounds very interesting.

In closing, thanks for all the tips, I truly appreciate it.

With regards to Mount & Blade, I have probably put hundreds of hours into the first game, many dozens into With Fire and Sword, and nearly a hundred in Warband: Viking Conquest. However, I for some reason was never able to get into base game Warband, I tried several times with several files and never could play more than a couple of hours. However, there are some really good mods I would like to suggest. (I heavily recommend playing the base game for a good while before modding it as I feel modding can sometimes spoil the main game.)

My favorites in particular would be Perisno (I got all of these on ModDB), Fires of War, Europe in Flames, and Sands of Faith. I've probably put the most time of those into Perisno followed by Fires of War, but they're all good. There are some other great ones out there, but these are the ones I've played the most.

I apologize in advance, but I'm only aware of these being available in English in case anyone wanted to play them in anything else.

If Dragon Knight counts, I can recommend Divinity 2.

My favorite "Knight" RPG(s) are probably: King Arthur (don't bother to try playing the Fallen Champions expansion that is also included, until you've completed the original, and want a really hard challenge, or are a bit of a sadist (or both, lol)...it can be frustratingly hard. The original game though is awesome, IMHO of course. And the second offering: King Arthur 2 is also quite fun. IIRC (been quite a while since I have played these games) in this game package, I would actually recommend playing the Dead Legions DLC first, as it is a prequel of sorts to King Arthur 2, is shorter, and helps to introduce you to the game mechanics and story leading to the main game.

They are both on sale right now at 75% off, so you really can't go wrong.

King Arthur is indeed a joyful mixture of storytelling, choice and strategy. Similar in strategy style is " The Kings' Crusade "
though probably the best comparison for that game is Warhammer : Mark of Chaos. It is a shame that the kings crusade is not available on gog. The Bretonian adventures playable in Total War Warhammer 2 might also be pretty much to anyone's liking with knighthood in his mind but with the severely lacking of dialogue and choice beyond the strategical and tactical choices you have to make this is nowhere near what King Arthur offers

Have not heard of The King's Crusade, but if it does ever come here, I will be sure to pick it up, and give it a try. Regarding King Arthur, yeah, when I was first looking into the games, i saw that they are indeed, really a hybrid type RPG/Strategy game. I was almost thrown off upon learning that it contained actual "text style" adventures within the game, and thought that odd. But they are just wonderful, and really add to the charm of the whole game....the best part of which, they have serious consequences on your game, possibly good or bad, and sometimes a little of both. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love 'em :-D

btw, Mark of Chaos/Battle March is also an old time favorite...
