I love history, and I love the Middle Ages. You can count me in.
The War of the Roses encompasses one of the most brutal perionds in medieval Europe. (It inspired Game of Thrones, but has a better ending) It all started when Henry Bolingbroke overthrew King Richard II, becoming King Henry IV. His descendant Henry V was well liked due to his successful campaign in France, but died at an early age. This left the throne to Henry V's unstable child, who became King Henry VI. The king's incompetence and madness led to an uprising by House York, who claimed the right to the throne from Richard II's bloodline. Edward of York took the throne and had Henry killed in prison, just like Henry Bolingbroke had done to Richard II decades earlier. After Edward's death, the crown is seized by his brother Richard, who imprison's Edward's sons in the Tower of London, never to be seen again. Richard III's ruthlessness can't save him from another coup, however, which restores House Lancaster to the throne. (Evidence suggests he was not the hunchbacked monster from Shakespeare, but portraying him as gleefully evil makes the story more interesting) Henry VII secured the Lancastarian reign for years to come by marrying a York, ending the War of the Roses.
Even if I don't win, thanks for letting me share one of my favorite pieces of history.
