The opportunity presented itself so I watched three movies that are basically the same:
Treasure Island (1990),
Muppet Treasure Island, and
Treasure Planet.
First,
Treasure Island. Since I like older movies this was fun to see Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, and Christian Bale all in the same movie. (I am pretty sure three of those four were in the 70s
Three Musketeers movie) Noticing that apparently Dr. Livesey in this film was General Veers from Empire Strikes Back was also pretty fun. My understanding is that this is a close adaptation of the book to film, but truth be told the last time I read this was during detention in fifth grade and it was the abridged version so I cannot speak to it. This was easily my favorite of the three movies, being whimsical and humorous while still maintaining a serious enough atmosphere wherein pirates actually come across at least a little bit like the menacing characters they should. For a TV movie (written and directed by Fraser Heston) the special effects actually look pretty good and the acting is pretty good. I also thought that this version of Jim was the most sympathetic of the three I saw, he's not pining about his life before hand wishing per se to go on an adventure it just land in his lap and he takes the opportunity. In spite of being an Academy Award winner, I never considered Charlton Heston a particularly good actor except for a few times like in
55 Days at Peking and
Major Dundee I liked him quite a bit in this movie. He was pretty decently the best Long John Silver, I thought. Just the way he chums up with Jim feels more believable in this one. If you get the chance to watch it do so if you want to watch a Treasure Island movie.
Second,
Muppets Treasure Island. It might be called something else but it says it all to just call it the Muppet one. Predictably, this one has more singing and comedy in it. Some of the humor is actually pretty good, favorite is early on with Billy Bones' death. Also, this version of Mr. Arrow is pretty amusing. I thought Squire was funnier in the 1990 film, however, and this version of Jim was not as sympathetic for me, but it's not a terribly serious movie either. I should remember Tim Curry as Long John but it's neither my favorite performance from him nor the best rendition of the character of the three. He's not bad and Tim Curry gets in some good lines all the same, he's just not got the same chemistry in the role if you ask me. That said, for the time it takes, it's easily worth watching if Muppets Treasure Island sounds good to you. Although, I liked the
Muppets From Space more.
Last is
Treasure Planet. This is one I wanted for a while but it seemed to go out of print until it suddenly popped up again. I grabbed it and it's pretty decent, that said it falls in the middle of these three. For one, it is simultaneously not as early 2000s as one would think but then it is. Excellent 2d animation, pretty good character design and expressiveness. All the 3d stuff is where the film shows age in the visuals. They are not too egregious but at the same time it is a little overdone in some scenes especially and it does contrast with the 2d a bit. That said, I really do like movies from this era like
Atlantis the Lost Empire,
Road to El Dorado, and
Prince of Egypt. This one makes it into that circle but somewhat in the back, I like Atlantis a bit more still than this Disney offering. With regards to the story, this one makes some liberties with the setting but keeps most of the story similar to the first movie I mentioned. They did combine Squire and Livesey into one character, and that is a shame on the one hand but if two characters could be combined it probably was them. I enjoyed the version of the captain in this one quite a bit as well, close to the 1990 movie. There is one insert song in this one, I should point out, but it is not a musical either. That said, this version of Long John is the second best one, being believable in his friendship with Jim and being a character who never crosses from being a redeemable villain. They offload that onto another character. For even a follow up to Atlantis they do kill off quite a few characters while not quite as many of them as you kind of were expecting. Last thing I want to say, I found the ending unsatisfying. But, that happens.
Overall, these were all versions of the same story through a few different lenses and they are all fairly well worth your time. I would post links to the trailers but they don't really do any favors (especially the 1990 film) to the movies. Eh, bad trailers are their own art.
