JDelekto: It's funny you mention that, because 'a' was the first thing that came to mind until I decided to Google it, after all it is a letter and banning a letter, much less a vowel. The last thing I would want to have is uncontrollable vowel movements.
Well, the reason why I said that is that I think it doesn't really matter if you lose either "the" or "a" if you still keep the other one, so that instead of distinguishing between x and y, you could still distinguish between 0 and 1, if you get my meaning. Instead of "the word" vs. "a word", you'd have "word" vs. "a word", or "the word" vs "word", and people would still understand the difference. I might be wrong, but I think Swedish works that way? In any case, in English you only lose one or two words if you remove articles, in other languages like German, it would also change parts of the grammar.
