(I don't mean to insult all 5-years old, some of them are a lot smarter than...this.)

It boils down to this: if you know that a lot of people didn't like this year, then you also know why.
5 year olds also grow out of it

Random thought: 2020 still sounds like science fiction to me. And it's almost over.

At least good science fiction?

It could still get worse though (maybe Trump starting a war before he's out).
On the positive side, we were kind of lucky that Corona isn't that deadly. I shudder to think what will happen when there's a pandemic with a real killer virus, as seems quite likely during this century.

Cyberpunk? Yeah, good SF, but shitty world.
Taking a good look with some distance, it's basically happened. Just... more banal.

From a scientific point of view deadly diseases run themselves out simply by killing the host. Something like Ebola can only ever cause local, maybe (with today's means) multilocal crises. Which would be really horrible, no doubt.
So killer virus and pandemic are essentially very unlikely. Closest thing would be AIDS, because it can take decades before it kills you, all the while you keep infecting people.

Also long term effect of Corona aren't very much known right now. There are hints that people might be impaired for life, and if that's true it's a major blow to our society with a performance fetish.

True enough, but I wasn't thinking of something like Ebola (which would indeed burn out relatively quickly), but more of something like SARS (also a Coronavirus). There was a study by the Bundestag in 2013 where they ran such a scenario and thought it could kill millions just in Germany (p.55):
https://dipbt.bundestag.de/dip21/btd/17/120/1712051.pdf
But who knows, maybe a more deadly virus would be taken seriously earlier and harder counter-measures taken. A lot of people don't even really believe that Covid-19 is a problem after all.

GeraltOfRivia_PL: I don't know why so many people are hating on 2020. I loved that year and i hope i am as happy in many more to come.
So what did you like about it, and why?
avatar
GeraltOfRivia_PL: Why do people hate 2020?
Because it was NOT what movies made us believe. Flying cars? Hoverboards? Hologram movies? Space colonies? Teleportation? Time machines? Robotic limbs giving superpowers? Automatic hospital machines that quickly cure any disease, like cancer?

Nothing like that! All we got was better looking video games and... ok, Star Trek was right that we will get handheld communication devices with video. That's pretty cool, I admit.

But otherwise, meh! Meh meh MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHH! Meh...

Oh, yeah, why do people hate a year in which several hectares of forests were burnt, massive protests took place, a lot of controversial things happened and there's a virus which killed more than 1 million people? I wonder.

We feel that this thread is opinionated in such a way that it can hurt our users feelings and people that struggled with this year and, in addition, can lead to discussion about topics that we do not tolerate on our forums.

Because of that, we decided to close it.
