Cyberpunk? Yeah, good SF, but shitty world.
Taking a good look with some distance, it's basically happened. Just... more banal.
morolf: On the positive side, we were kind of lucky that Corona isn't that deadly. I shudder to think what will happen when there's a pandemic with a real killer virus, as seems quite likely during this century.
From a scientific point of view deadly diseases run themselves out simply by killing the host. Something like Ebola can only ever cause local, maybe (with today's means) multilocal crises. Which would be really horrible, no doubt.
So killer virus and pandemic are essentially very unlikely. Closest thing would be AIDS, because it can take decades before it kills you, all the while you keep infecting people.
Also long term effect of Corona aren't very much known right now. There are hints that people might be impaired for life, and if that's true it's a major blow to our society with a performance fetish.
