Habanerose: Refund? Wasn't an option for years, and even now it's rather hard to even get a single refund.
Asked for it twice, received it twice.

Yeah that's nonsense. If you're within the requirements it's pretty much automatic. If you're outside of them, then yes you'll have to be a special case (ie: Have a good reason). At least you get to play your game for 2 hours to test it. On GOG after you've downloaded it you'll have to prove it's broken to get a refund or at least jump through a number of tech solving hoops before you'll get one.

Lucky You!

Sadly, some of my friends weren't as lucky...

With steam's refund policy, it has nothing to do with luck. There are clear requirements and if you meet them, you'll get your refund.

Given how common it is to see someone whining on the Steam forums about the injustice of not getting a refund for their game when they were clearly well past the requirements for it I'm going to be skeptical of these friends requests.
Edit: Nevermind, pretty sure I've already made my argument in this thread before.

Well, this wasn't the case for a long time on Steam, and still still a rather recent change if you think about it. (Keep in mind that before the EU was putting pressure on Steam to allow refunds, there was no such thing really, and if you bought crap, you were usually stuck with it).

But at leasr in this domain they finally improved.

Well, hope you 'll never find yourself in their shoes then... as it's always easier to blame it on the small guys rather than the big one.

I'm well aware of the restrictions on refunds. If I pass them before I ask for a refund that's my fault.

marklaur: Never purchased a game from steam, shame as the fallout 4 looks very good.

Such is life

Klumpen0815: Don't be sad, you're probably better off giving Fallout 1-3 another whirl. :)
Your probably right, I have 1 - 3, (all on disk) maybe time to look at 3 again as there are plenty of mods out for it now

Cheers

Here's a highly praised overhaul that includes many mods and changes the gameplay significantly:
Wanderer's Edition

Thanks for the link. I will download this one on the weekend.

So far I've managed to boycott about 8000 Steam games. Unfortunately the other 2100 or so are bound to my account.
I don't boycott Steam, but I have re-bought a large portion of my Steam games here on GOG.
I won't consider purchasing any game that requires any form of online authorization as a condition to either install or play.
I've never had a Steam account nor have I ever considered redeeming any Steam keys that have been offered to me. I was looking forward to Sword Coast Legends, but stopped following it's development once I heard that it was going to be offered only on Steam. I won't be playing unless offered at GOG or DRM free at Humble Bundle. I have too many DRM free games that I actually own outright and can install & play without outside permission to waste consideration, time or money on games tied to a proprietary client.

I definitely can appreciate this sentiment. I just love online shooters too much to go without Steam/Origin cold turkey! :)
