How can I delete my account?

issuban: How can I delete my account?
Just a question: why do you need to delete the account? Can't you just like... stop using it and forget that it exists? You could even give it some super-hard password that even you can't remember and no hacker could come up with, acting as you (Mr. Issuban). You could also give it some other email address to make sure you never receive any emails from GOG, maybe even some your friend or enemy you want to annoy.

A few reasons I could only come up with:

1. Deleting an account is a political statement towards GOG, a bit like burning a flag on the streets.

2. You are afraid an unused account eats up GOG resources.

3. ???

4. PROFIT!

Well, 1 is the obvious answer. However I tend to go through all my accounts once a year and try to close out ones I don't use, so there are valid reasons for wanting it. Yo'u'd be amazed at how many websites ignore the request or are unable to do such a thing, likely as they are selling your data to anyone.

Well, now that you remind me, I could see it as a valid reason that if one has written some controversial and poorly thought stuff on e.g. some forum, and you could somehow be connected to you even by outsiders (because you happened to use your real name in the account, or you know many people know who is using certain alias in the internets).

A bit like i can certainly understand some people might want to delete their Facebook account, if they e.g. want to a political career later on etc. Everything you have written 20 years ago will still haunt you.

Yeah, could be that too. Maybe when (not if) I decide to run for president, I want my GOG account closed as well. Or why did people think I am backing up my GOG games to a local hard drive with gogrepo, huh?

GOG reserves the right to terminate your account in the user agreement, so it's only fair that users also have the right to terminate their account. The effort is really not that big.

What GOG actually has to do is deleting all user related data they have (short of forum contributions maybe?). So there is an effect. Thinking about a super hard password or just writing them to delete the account - there isn't much difference as long you are okay with the deletion being permanent.

I was trying to understand "why", not whether GOG should do it or not if the user wants

Good point though that deleting a GOG account doesn't probably wipe one's forum contributions anyway. so it can't be that either. I guess I will then keep my GOG account anyway.

Will have to wait for the OP saying it. Maybe he/she is game addicted and tries to get away from it currently. Won't help though because there is no DRM. Bad luck.
It is absolutely none of my business, but I am dying of curiosity here.

Maybe the OP recently got married and his wife HATES video games and she is the one who force him to close his account? He didn't want to do it and is crying himself to sleep because he has 1322 GOG games that he will lose but he "loves" his wife so he will do it. ??? :-)

If your wife hates video games you don't get rid of your GOG account, you get rid of your wife.

Looking forward to your nomination in 2024.

This... is sad but I can relate, kind of.

She'd be deflated at that news.

I'm assuming a "make GOG account - discover they don't sell steam keys - get angry and delete account !1!!1!" scenario, but I may be way off. Maybe it's just the voices telling him to do it.
