Fuz: Biased source.
They already stated in the past that the game "shouldn't exist".

Anyway, anyone able to explain me why GOG sells Carmageddon?

EBToriginal: It's historically important/one of the blues likes the game personally?

tinyE: I liked it but then I own the original 'Faces of Death' on DVD so I guess that's to be expected. :P

EBToriginal: Your next job is to watch A Serbian Film. Go on get to it.
The thing about FOD is that when it came out there were whispers that some of the footage was fake, and as I kid I'd sit there with my friends and try ti discern what was real and what wasn't. Watching it now, obviously NONE OF IT IS REAL, and when I say it's not real, I mean Ed Wood could have made this thing look more authentic. :P Jesus you can actually see people who are supposedly taken off guard READING OFF OF CUE CARDS! XD

All I hear is you not watching A Serbian Film. I'll cop to having already seen it, way back when I was with the partner I let cut me up some.

Most disturbing film I have seen is probably "Cannibal Holocaust". Mainly because of the gratuitous scenes where they kill real animals. Still a great movie though.

I own that too. I'm not proud.

That movie actually had a good story to it, a twist on Frankenstein's Monster if you will. Honestly apart from the animal stuff (which can be similarly seen in "Apocalypse Now") I don't think it's any worse that what goes for Rated R these days.

jefequeso: I don't like Postal 2. In fact, I think it's a rubbish game. But I do have to admit that it worked on a certain level, and I think that's because it at least had a lot of self-awareness. As I said before, Hatred seems to lack any sort of self-awareness. It's just unironically emo. And to me, that makes it really unappealing.
I never played postal 2 , nor have any interest in it after the little footage I saw of it a while back.

I would have found some merit in hatred if they took a 'delusional' approach, they could have made a story with paranoia and they seemed to really have the tools to go with hallucinations and weird things like that.
A tinfoil hat shooter with completely surrealistic goals could have worked. But a power fantasy mediocre shooter (kill civilians, execute/regenerate) ? big meh, quite creepy.

You mean Dr. Francis B. Gross lied to us? No way!

Supposedly, some of the footage of accidents is real, but most of my knowledge about Faces of Death comes from the Cinema Snob's review of it, so I have no clue.

My DVD copy comes with a short film on how they did some of the more famous scenes, like the monkey brains which were in reality raw cauliflower and strawberry jello.

The movie is really great, and actually fairly smart for an exploitation film. And yes, the fictional violence isn't worse than most other horror movies. But a 5 minute scene where they kill a turtle is still a bit hard to swallow.

That combination sounds almost worse than the real thing.

While we're on the topic of Cannibal Holocaust and Cinema Snob, his review of the movie is also great:
"I wonder who the real cannibals are."

Will totally agree there. His reviews are good in general, but with that one, he definitely went the extra mile.

jefequeso: You know, this brings up an interesting idea... given that Hatred is basically just Postal 1 with modern visuals, and managed to get this amount of press, I'll bet someone could just reskin Chiller or Carmageddon and watch the free press roll in.
well Stainless Games did make a new Carmageddon but no one really noticed. The only reason why Hatred got noticed in the first place was because some mouth breathers decided to spam Valve about the game, saying it's racists and the devs are nazi's ect. Which gets the game pulled and hits the press and people notice the game and the devs a way to market the game. If that never happened I do not doubt no one would of given a damn, it would just popped up on Steam a few people would of bought it and that was that.

Honestly outside of the game being really painfully repetitive like Postal 1 was, enter level kill X people go to next stage, lather rinse repeat. It's really not that controversial, kill all the fags was more controversial and badly done to boot.

Sure the premise of a spree killer especially with the recent rash of spree shootings that had happened here in the States the past few years is still not that bad. a bit tasteless maybe. I don't know maybe it's because I've seen much, much worse subjects being turned into games and no one bats a eye because few people knew they even exist, like this concentration camp simulator and most stuff from neo nazi and other white supremacist groups.

Still my point is, had that initial incident with Steam not happened, I doubt anyone would of noticed but because it happened the devs started using it to work people into wanting to check out this game because it's so controversial and most not all are dumb enough to fall for it just for that reason alone. Again since alot of time you have to spell things out I am not saying all people who wanted or were interested in this game did so because of the controversy just that there became alot more who did because of it.

A second review showed up on Metacritic.com:

"Hatred is a very playable game for fans of adrenaline and bloody thrills, although the content of the game is a bit controversial. The game could be longer, more diverse and better optimized (Unreal Engine 4 is hungry for power). And given the overall quality Hatred did not deserve all the media buzz surrounding its development and most likely it won't be remembered in a few years' time."

In some way, Hatred is the "a serbian film" of video games : same marketing point and same end product....
