jefequeso: So, I'm not allowed to be disgusted by the idea of murdering innocent civilians in a game? This is what you're telling me?

monkeydelarge: You are treating the game, not as a game but as something real. Something more than a game. It makes sense to find the game distasteful, the same way, I find certain kinds of cheese, styles of clothing and twerking, distasteful. But to be disgusted by the idea of an animated image murdering other animated images in a game, makes no sense to me unless you see the game as a part of real life(you see those animated images as real people). You need to accept that it's just a game and not a part of real life because that is the truth.
soo...... i am not allowed to be disgusted by the idea of murdering innocent civilians in a game?

It's not possible for you be disgusted by the idea of murdering innocent civilians in a game because no game lets you murder innocent civilians. Games let you control an animated image that lets you murder other animated images. But because we are talking about animated images, it is not murder but simply...art. Of course, inside your head, anything is possible but we are talking about reality, here.

Ok, fine... I find it "distasteful." Happy?

It's a pointless semantics argument. I don't find the idea of pointlessly mowing down a bunch of innocent civilians in graphic ways to be entertaining, and I'm sick to death of people like you jumping all over me any time I express that kind of sentiment.

KasperHviid: The post I critizised only said that he had heard some rumor. Which is why I tracked down the source:

"Hatred" is a genocide simulator developed by Neo-Nazis
So if someone writes they're nazis, that makes them nazis? That's absurd.

Is "non-hostile npc" a more accurate term then?

ShadowWulfe: Sounds cool, hopefully it comes to GOG.

Why is this more controversial than GTA?
Because GTA is very popular and funny.

It's simulating the act of murdering innocent civilians, and some of us find that act disgusting, just like some of you find that act entertaining. How about you accept that different people feel differently about things? I'm not attacking you for ENJOYING firing non-existent virtual firearms to kill non-existent virtual innocents, so why are you attacking me for not enjoying it?

Semantics are never pointless. They are the essence of meaning and understanding. As long as you don't try to block the existence of something because it makes you feel uncomfortable, I have no problem with your sentiment.
I have to admit I see a game like this much differently that I would have before I had kids.

The thought of my five and six-year old boys seeing that trailer... with the civvies begging for their lives before being brutally murdered... fills my heart with terror.

It's one more thing I have to protect them from until they're mature enough to have full context.

Did I ever imply I wanted to "block the existence of something because it makes you feel uncomfortable?"

It's not a pointless semantics argument. And the reason people like me jump all over you is because we are sick and tired of being seen as people with no empathy or violent psychopaths. We are sick and tired of being watched by our neighbors and old people like we are dangerous. We are sick and tired of people thinking, "Oh no, he plays killerspiele, it's only a matter of time before he goes on a rampage!" We are sick and tired of people trying to make it so buying the games we want will be insanely difficult.

So not only do I find your way of seeing this game to be out of touch with reality, I also find that your position helps demonize gamers like me.

I apologize for being disgusted by something.

I wonder why people accuse you of lacking empathy...

To all people arguing that "it's just a game" and "these are not real people":

By your "logic" it would be OK to make and distribute games where you're playing as a child rapist or some nazi death camp manager. Because "Hey! It's not real and I'm enjoying playing this! What's your problem with me having some fun?".
