drealmer7: To me, John Carpenter is highly over-rated, I find some of his movies to be very very good, and some to be very very bad.
He's all over the place, but it doesn't make him over-rated, it makes him un-rateable. He goes indeed from the best to the worst. but he goes there with an energy and enthousiasm that make all his films undearing one way or another. I adore his great films (I'd put "prince of darkness" in that category though), and I enjoy immensely his bad films (I wouldn't really defend Escape from LA). They feel like sitting on the floor with friends, improvising a story with all our toys. And then, you've got the commentary tracks, making it even funnier. As if the transpiring movie set's fun wasn't communicative enough without these. There's something Calvin&Hobbeseque about Carpenter, which disarms me every time. Independantly from his "real" movies (TheThing, Starman, etc).

Anyway, as for the OP, no, no specific marathon here. I'm not very calendar-based. But keeping an eye on the thread for any random horror spree at other times.

Carpenter is a master film maker and this thread proves it, though it took me a second to see how.

Simply, look at everyone's best and worst of Carpenter list, they are ALL DIFFERENT! :D

For everyone that thinks 'Big Trouble' is a great movie there are people like me who think it's a piece of shit. I thought 'Prince of Darkness' was fucking great, drealmer thought it was horrible. There are people out there who think 'Escape From NY' is terrible, while I want to be buried with a copy of it.

The fact that no one can agree on his turds from his gems makes him a director that means all things to all people.

How many others can say that?
Sleep marathon - best marathon i need right now:P

To be honest, i pointed at these two because i mostly agree with drealmer's classification otherwise.

And Sachys likes Ghosts of Mars which I hate, and dislikes Starman, which I think is great. But like you I think Prince of Darkness is fucking great, and drealmer thinks it's bad.

Damn, this is labyrinthian.

We only need someone to dislike In the Mouth of Madness and Assault on Precint 13 to make it complete insanity.

If Sachys likes Ghosts of Mars then I am never speaking to him again. :P

IN FACT, I don't know if any of you okay Prison Architect, but Sachys is available to put into your prison. His ass goes to the Hole as soon as he sets foot off the bus! :P

Breja: If by "everybody" you mean 21% of the critics and 24 % of the audience, going by Rotten Tomatoes. Mind you, I'm not saying those ratings should be used to judge whether a movie is good or bad, but saying that "everybody else enjoyed it"? Yeah, no, not even close. For once I'm not in the minority here.
Nope, I mean everybody.

*points at trail of corpses
As fellow aussies will attest..... we dont really celebrate Halloween here (oh places will try to take advantage and sell the stuff like theres no tomorrow) -- aside from the odd kid trying to trick or treat....

anyway sleeping through it..:D.....supposed to be spookiest night of the year when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest..... :P...

bykowsky: WOW! Nice list, man! I didn't know that there are good Lovecraftian movies out there.
Check out Dagon.

more de-railing:

Huh, Prince of Darkness love from the most, eh? Weird. I find it SOOOOO cheesy and horribly written in a bad way, I love the idea though (I think that is what Carpenter is best at, coming up with a good idea, how to pull it off with a good execution he is not so good at.)

I love Escape from LA, maybe just because it is more Snake, but that is good cheese to me, plus it has AJ Langer in it, so I'm biased (speaking of her, she's in The People Under the Stairs, too, which is good!)

I tell people all of the time about the coffee-can "draw your guns" cheat he uses, it's hilarious!!!

on topic:

We've been marathoning some X-Files this month. Ooof, it's so bad, why did I never see how bad it was? I never followed it hardcore or anything but I'd watched many episodes way back in the day and thought it was better than I am finding it now. We're into the 6th season which is actually the best season so far. We watched the Fight The Future movie last week after finishing season 5/before starting season 6, OMG that was BAAAAAD, so bad!

We watched Needful Things the other day.

I have to let my partner choose which horror movies we watch most of the time because she doesn't care for them much and so it has to have an appeal for her and it's better if she is in the mood for some gore/pain or whatever is in store. No telliing what else she'll be up for this year, I'm hoping to get her to watch Ravenous (which she saw when it came out and didn't like it, but she's a different person with different tastes now) and Blood & Donuts which I've never seen.
Here's some movies
Trick 'r Treat
House
Phantasm

Rule of Rose
Spooky but not quite a supernatural game. It wasn't released in the UK due to an EU apparatchiks smear campaign so brits had to set sail to acquire it.

The news comes as the body that decided on the title's PEGI-16 rating reacts with fury over "grossly innacurate" national media coverage of the game.
RoR, which was published by Sony in other territories, was due to be released across the EU today.
'Following discussions with our retail and publishing partners, 505 Games has taken the decision not to publish Rule of Rose in the UK at this time,' said the publisher in a statement this morning.
Got some more.

The Conjuring A 70s style haunted house movie.
The Legend of Hell House A haunted house movie from the 70s.

You've been watching all of the things you've been listing? Or are you just rambling off-topicly horror movies.

The bad list from what I've seen:

Halloween
Christine
Prince of Darkness
Vampires
Ghosts of Mars (which I never even finished I just turned off because it was so stupid.)

Good list from what I'vse seen:

Elvis (was SOOO surprised how great this was, I don't like Elvis or really know much about him, well, after this movie I did!)
Escape from New York
The Thing
StarMan
Big Trouble in Little China
In the Mouth of Madness
Village of the Damned
Escape from L.A.

I know, I still have a few crucial of his to watch: Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, The Fog, and They Live
Whaaat? John Carpenter's a really good vampire flick and a totally hilarious movie! I can definitely recommend that one!

Breja: Pretty much every one of Carpenter's horrors is great (except for Ghosts of Mars, I still can't believe Carpenter made that crap). In the Mouth of Madness is simply superb.
Oh yes, Carpenter is a master of Horror and as much as I love The Thing and The Fog, I must admit Mouth of madness is the best one.
Ghost of Mars is an awful movie which only proves studios shouldn't mess with someone's artistic vision. This is why we can't have nice things...

I disagree. I think Ghosts of Mars is a decent "popcorn" movie. It's no masterpiece, but just fun, mindless entertainment. One of the main qualities I appreciate about it is its use of practical effects and models instead of totally relying on CGI effects.
