Try the DRM-free online gaming platform.

GOG Galaxy: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The GOG Galaxy client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the GOG Galaxy Beta, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the GOG Galaxy Beta and find out more on gog.com/galaxy, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!
Bit disappointed that even when you choose to install the client on another drive, it still places files on your OS drive.

tinyE: And what is this window on the left side of the scree? Do I need that and can I turn it off?
avatar
mike_cesara: Which left? Your's or mine?
I guess you mean the place where installed games shows up.
THIS

And I just noticed when I go into Task Manager Galaxy is still running even when I'm not on. Is it always running, always using my bandwidth?

Install any game from your Galaxy library and you'll see how it works : )
Look in the systray, right about clock you will find Galaxy icon. To exit the client entirely you have right click on it and choose Exit.

One more stupid question Doc and then I'll stop promise. And yes I could go to the sticky on this but I have you here in person and I hate reading instructions off a list. :P

Just to see what you meant I downloaded MK1 (it's tiny and works) which showed up in said window and yadda yadda yadda, so what is the difference from playing in through my Galaxy window and from playing it from the Icon on my desktop?

Playing through Galaxy will allow for all the Galaxy features (at least the ones that are currently working) where using the desktop shortcut will just work as the old system did where Galaxy is just a download client

May makes you feel special ; )
Not much at the moment. Faster updates, tracking play time perhaps. Easy acces to extras without using regular browser.. It is all about Galaxy in general, multiplayer, friends and other social things ; )

AmethystViper: Has the beta been sent to me yet? I'm still waiting to try out GOG Galaxy.
avatar
groundhog42: If you've applied for Galaxy Beta, you then have to wait for an email titled "GOG Galaxy Beta invitation". This has the key for Galaxy, which can be redeemed in the same way as a game. FYI I applied yesterday for the Beta and the above email has just arrived, so don't worry if yours hasn't.
Good to know. Thanks.

And I need to redownload everything on Galaxy? It looks like I have MK on my system twice now. :P
Nice. Got my permission to join the beta. Will update the Alpha when I get back.

Not really, first of all scan for your already installed games.
Okay just wanted to say that I got my Beta invite just now and I am trying it out.

tinyE: ... so what is the difference from playing in through my Galaxy window and from playing it from the Icon on my desktop?
None so far. Galaxy is supposed to be optional. So there better be no difference.

There is an option to import from already existing downloads, but I have it not running now and don't remember where.

Cool. That's going to save me a few days. XD

Okay I think that covers in about now.

Games downloaded through Galaxy are uncompressed as for now. You may still, however, download regular, offline installer from extras. Depends on your connection, it can take some time. Importing installed games doesn't seem like a bad choice. : )
