== BUG REPORTING ==

Please use: http://mantis.gog.com and include
1. steps to reproduce the bug (if possible)
2. screenshot or movie showing the bug (if possible)
3. Galaxy Client logs (see below)

Where can I find Galaxy logs on my computer?
On Windows 7 or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Mac OS X: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

== FEATURE SUGGESTIONS ==

Please use: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy. For feature suggestions and votes on them please try do explain how Galaxy and its users will really benefit from it.

== IMPORT ALREADY INSTALLED GAMES TO GALAXY ==

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the Galaxy logo button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library (click on the image of the game), then click the More button and select "Manage Installation" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

== KNOWN ISSUES ==
- throttling max download speed is not yet possible
- notifications related to incoming chat messages and friend requests does not always disappear instantly when consumed and may require reloading Store page
- games imported from existing installations will auto-update once, even if updating is disabled
- Moving Galaxy from /Applications on Mac OS X will stop the app from working
- Galaxy cannot be launched by other users on the same computer

For everyone who has a problem with missing api-ms-crt dlls in Client's versions post 1.1.5:
Please install one of those windows update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118401
You may need to update Windows to meet the requirements for these:
For Windows 8.1 and for Windows Server 2012: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919355
For Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976932

You can also try reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables 2015 (x86) if you meet above requirements.
Available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

If above instructions doesn't work for you, create a separate issue on mantis.gog.com and we'll try to help you individually.

Please note that this solution only helps with the missing api-ms-crt dlls.

Answering this question: Why 1.1 doesn't work after updating to 1.2?

This is happening probably due to incompatible database from version 1.2, please delete this folder:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GOG.com\Galaxy\storage
usually
C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\storage\

Then you'll have to use scan&import (menu under the top Galaxy logo) function to see your games back in Galaxy Client.

The friends window needs to have a "Add Friends" button to simplify the process of adding friends.

jauncourt: Click the gear icon at the bottom of the installed games panel. The Settings dialog will come up. Click the "..." button next to the "Install game to:" input box, and a browse dialog will come up. Select your desired location, click OK. Click OK on the Settings dialog.
Two comments on your attached screen grabs.

(1) Does the Galaxy client really take up most of its space telling you to download it (again)?

(2) I thought it was just my system, but apparently Galaxy can't even render a button correctly. Doh!

EDIT: and of course this silly forum doesn't make it easy to see which screen grabs I was referring to.

Galaxy is updating games with downloads bigger than the main installer. The download progress looks like it is downloading the full installed size and not the installer size. I.e. the installer for Shadowgate is .9GB with an installed space of 2.1GB, and the download for the update in Galaxy lists as 2.3GB.

This process may actually be working perfectly, but at the minimum, it looks wrong.

MarkoH01: I know Win7 for quite a while now and also use it at work. I simply don't like the explorer and several other things in it which makes the system imo much less user friendly. I know however that you can tweak it quite a bit and I'll try to find out everything about it. Unfortunately there is afaik no Win7 XP skin ;)

Still time will tell how many of my old XP only games will still run ....
I know that even just from GoG there are still a couple of titles that I can't reliably get to run without xp sadly. Empire Earth I have never gotten to run, even through vmware.

I've actually considered building an xp machine before and going in the other direction...

There are actually windows xp skins for windows 7, but I don't know how well they do. I would hazard a guess that they are not great though :P

I know that I have a few games I can't get to run on anything later than XP, but my notes show that Empire Earth isn't one of them, so that one is probably dependent on your hardware configuration.

EDIT: and this is on 64-bit Windows 7.

jauncourt: Nope. There is no installer in the game install directory, I just did a second test. The first test was using the default download directory, and had the same result.
avatar
BKGaming: Not sure what you mean. There's not suppose to be an installer in the games install directory.

1. Galaxy temporally stores the files while downloading the unpacked files (ie not a standard GOG installer) in a temp directory (C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\downloads by default).
2. Galaxy moves these to the install directory (C:\GOG Games by default) when done.
3. Games is installed via an installation script.

Eventually you should be able to zip those files in the install directory and then unzip them on another PC for instance and click the install script which will run (creating what the games needs to work)... meaning you will be able to create a effective backup easily. There is no install script available yet however, it's planned.

Destro actually explained this:

If you click install, it always downloads game in pre-installed form on per-file basis. Yes, there is an ntallation script executed at the end which might look like our installer file name and can get big depending on redists included, but it cerainly isb't the standalone installer being downloaded and launched. If there is any exception to this, I'm not aware of it.

There is a compression planned to speed up initial installation as well as support for byte differential patching to speed up updates. No ETA.

In regaerd to question about archiving installations - said installation script will be in future included with game installation for games that require it. This way the installation will be backupable and upon resoting it on a fresh OS all it will take will be launching the script to have it working.

BKGaming:
So, yes, we have to download the games from the website again if we want an offline archive of the games. Not good to have to download stuff twice, effectively, on a connection with usage caps. This is kind of a big deal to a lot of people.
ETA: My screenshot included the previous download folder for the copy of the same game (Humans Must Answer) I downloaded using the old downloader in January (I bought this for my kids, so it wasn't installed on my machine, just downloaded to it then installed on theirs). Galaxy did not create that folder, and it did not update the file within, the last modified date is still showing as 1/17/2015.

If you want a backup the you can be sure is independent of Galaxy and for offline use then yes for now... but as I said eventually each game that needs it will include an install script for backup purposes.

The GOG forums make you have to follow the little trail of right-pointing arrows to the parent articles in order to see the attachments (they're not included in quoted text).

There are two screen grabs in the article I replied to here:

Okay, do you mean the shot of the Galaxy client? I had put it on the Store>Galaxy tab selection because it was the least noisy/least revealing of personal info. If you hover over Store, then select Galaxy, you get taken to that screen, which, yes, weirdly and redundantly shows the download buttons for Galaxy.
Glad to see M&B Warband has been fixed in newest version. :)

MarkoH01: Thank you for sharing. This cleared up not just this situation it also answered my question why there are DX9 games which are checking if they are running in Win7 or WinXP. Your story was a real eye opener for me.

I already use Win7 64bit (I have win7 on my other HDD and know about the problems of 32bit systems with newer games since the Vanishing of Ethan Carter which has only hign textures in 64bit).

I know Win7 for quite a while now and also use it at work. I simply don't like the explorer and several other things in it which makes the system imo much less user friendly. I know however that you can tweak it quite a bit and I'll try to find out everything about it. Unfortunately there is afaik no Win7 XP skin ;)

No prob. :) Yeah, some games can have problems with Win 7 outright or with Win 7 64bit but a lot of the time there is some hack workaround for it if one digs hard enough online or with GOG support etc. The only game I haven't been able to get to work at all that comes to mind off the top of my head is the original Rainbow Six and its sequel Rogue Spear - original CD/DVD version. Dunno if the GOG version works or not and didn't want to re-buy it to find out since I own a couple copies of the originals. :) The original Command & Conquer was another one that bit me in the ass but there's a community made fan patch that bit-bashes the executables to fix some game bugs to work around that. I'm sure there are lots of other problematic games too, but some might run in a 32bit VM on a 64bit OS if they have issues too. One thing that is always true though is that every OS change comes with it a number of compatibility woes to have to resolve just due to the nature of things I guess. :) I had to adjust some habits a bit for Windows 7 too, and didn't like the default look n feel or explorer layout etc. either, but I ended up reconfiguring tonnes of stuff including registry hacks and some 3rd party tools to beat it into shape. :) My current desktop is a halfway mix between a Windows-XP style look n feel and Windows 7 but I've adapted to it even though it isn't 100% what I'd prefer. The overall user experience so far with Windows 7 that I've had has been fairly good though, definitely better than XP.

Having said that, I'm not eager to upgrade to Windows 8.x, 10 or anything else anytime soon either though and I'll ride Windows 7 into the dust until it reaches end of life too like I did with XP. ;oP I guess you could say I like to stick with what I have that works as long as possible but that eventually I'm willing to try change and try to adapt to it, but not until it is either mandatory or I have good personal reasons to take the plunge myself. ;)

Destro actually explained this:
Ouch, that's going to bite me in the ass potentially. My C: is my SSD which I reserve for specific things and games aren't one of them. It has very little space left on it varying between 1-4GB on any given day and I put all my game downloads, installations etc. on my E: and F: hard disks. If Galaxy is temporarily downloading to C: before moving files elsewhere it's going to end up filling my SSD and causing a problem eventually I imagine. I'll have to investigate this more and if it is doing that I'll have to move the temp directory it uses onto somewhere on my E: drive and set up a junction point on C: to point to E: to "fix" it. :)

Thanks for the warning though, I've been using Galaxy client for a few months now lightly testing mostly small games but I have had some failures and it could be due to something like C: filling. I definitely need to investigate more deeply.

LegatoSkyheart: The Client can't find either The Witcher 1 or The Witcher 2 on my Hard Drive. I pointed it out to the Folder and it tells me it didn't find any games.

I downloaded those two a couple of days before the Client went Open Beta.

Are those two games just not compatible with the Client yet?
Yes and no. If you download the standalone installers from the website for those games and install them and try to get Galaxy to import them it wont find them (as of a week ago anyway, unless the installers have been silently updated since then). However it is alleged by some that if you download the installers through Galaxy itself you get a more updated installation file that has Galaxy awareness. I didn't want to waste up to 40GB of my monthly cap to find out so I can't confirm that personally yet though.

I think it's just a state-of-chaos inconsistency that will get ironed out as the beta moves forward though as they've stated that they intend for the version of a game you get from Galaxy itself to be identical to the one you get if you download it manually modulo a small amount of time for the standalones to be built once the base game is ready. They just haven't got that whole system completely ironed out yet it seems.

So either install The Witcher 1/2 with Galaxy, or download it through Galaxy and install it, or just wait a while until they sort out the issue (which is what I'm doing). :)

Yep, that's been discussed many times in the thread previously. The standalone installers are compressed, however what Galaxy installs itself is a pre-installed version of the game that is sync'd across the network and then a small installer executable scripts things to complete the install. That process currently is not compressed so the files will be larger for the time being. They stated this will change in the future however. Not sure why they haven't enabled http compression on the webserver to do it on the fly or similar, perhaps the additional load on the servers are too high that way. They probably just need to write some code to precompress and cache builds or similar in a future update depending on how their infrastructure works etc.

BKGaming: Glad to see M&B Warband has been fixed in newest version. :)
Any idea what was fixed? I had a look and couldn't find a changelog in Galaxy or the site etc. I had tonnes of problems with Warband personally so if it's updated I'm hoping some/all of the issues have been fixed as I *loved* Mount and Blade and everyone says Warband is better, but I had tonnes of problems with it which was very disappointing. Fingers crossed!

Is there a way to share Wishlists with other people? I tried posting the link that appears on my Wishlist page but everyone tells me they are getting a 404 page... so I guess it just work if the owner is the one logged in?

Is this normal behavior? I mean, one would THINK a wishlist would be shareable, right?
